My Name Is Prince Appreciation Thread

His name was Prince and he was funky! Probably one of the better opening tracks on his albums. From the "mayte" pad to a burning sound to the Announcement of the NPG crecendoing to the piano intro and then to the Ahh Ahhs. VERY DRAMITIC if you ask me. A very odd song though for a very odd time in his life. Not many folks can pull off a song about themselves and grandstand it the way he did.

(I wanna be your lover) (Partyup) (Controversy) (Prince)

Was it a middle finger to WB? He certainly puts that stake in the ground firmly in that song...only to ditch his name soon afterward.

Another interesting thing I find is all the "hate" towards this song...esp the rapping.

To tell the truth, tell me what's my line?

It certainly was a hint of things to Come lol Although that album was a side step, I think...I liken prince to be the "prequel" of the Gold Experience.

I don't like the song in general, though I get a laugh out of it. It's very funky though, and the hook makes for a cool "theme song."

As we discussed on the other thread about the chains, I've always felt that Prince didn't necessarily mean what he said in this song (except at the end where he talks about God), but in fact was using it as an example of the negative side of his personality that is conquered by the end of the album. The "bad" songs can still be great, but I have always wondered about his intentions with this song.

It seems more directed at Michael Jackson in spots, too, as well as at Prince himself. Anyone who's trying to be king--which Prince has definitely tried to do on occasion.

Why? Would it sound better without? Or different rapping (I don't think that gangsta rap would have worked)

Negative side? I thought he was "rescuing" the princess who he was in love with
by kidnapping her ...

Could be. But since that song comes before Love 2 the 9's where the Princess is introduced, I assumed "till i get your daughter..." meant everyone's daughter, and that negative promiscuous side re-emerges on "I Wanna Melt With U" via cheating, and the Princess is consoled in "Sweet Baby," only to be won back over by Prince in The Continental.

Funny how there's so obviously a story, but it's not very clear, is it?

I hate it. Mainly because of the lyrics in the rap...

U jumped on, jumped on my D.I.C.K.
That's the one thing I don't play

It sounds positively homophobic.

He doesn't "pull it off". It sounds incredibly tacky and very dated.

Along with songs like Thunder, The Max and Daddy Pop in the category of songs I'm sure even Prince himself would rather erase from his back-catalogue.

I love that song then and I love it now. I played this sucker out when I got this CD. A great way to open a CD. It still has pure heat to it. I wish it was a bigger hit than it was cause that song is FIYAH!!!!! It's one of the songs where I actually enjoy hearing Prince's rap boxed Great stuff.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

You should see Jamie Foxx's parody of it from In Living Color. It's better. lol I love Prince parodies that pay attention to detail - they actually got people to play the members of the NPG in its incarnation at that time. Actually, I'm not convinced that that wasn't the real Tommy Barbarella...lurking

I agree w/u on Daddy Pop, but THUNDER is a fab song, and I don't thinkit's all that dated, the Max could be considered dated, but it's still a good tune.
