One of the best lines I saw in a review was for TRC where the reviewer said it was some of the best music he had ever done "buried beneath layers of spiritual horseshittery."

Holy shit did I laugh. lol
"What a lovely fat beat with a zompige baslijn"

"this is his best work since Sign O the times"

since Diamonds and Pearls I've always seen this sentence in many reviews... lol

Indeed a disturbing review technique. You read it in every review! followed by: but SOTT was such a great album this new work cannot even stand in the shadow of it...

Don't forget girls and boys: since 1988 Prince has released an album better than the previous one(s) but not as great as SOTT, according to the critics.

I remember Rolling Stone's review of the 'Graffiti Bridge' album. The reviewer actually thought that "Love Machine" was sung by Prince. You can clearly tell that it's a Time song (at one point,Morris even asks "Fellas...what time it is?") lol

I seem to recall that the guy who reviewed Sign "O" The Times in Rolling Stone way back when thought Camille was a real, seperate person who Prince was giving singing time to. lol

I remember that review! It is by Kurt Loder. He seriously listed the name "Camille" as one of the albums' guest artists...LOL...I think he described Camille as a "new singer".

I remember a particularly bad review of Lovesexy in People magazine where they said the album was sloppy but as prolific as P is, he would have a better one out by lunch. Really slammed it pretty hard but I don't remember any other specific details.

That review was vicious! They even said that the album cover is better than the music on the album eek

I recall Black Beat magazine's review of 'Parade'.They gave it a positive review, but they slammed the previous album in the first sentence...

For Prince fans who thought that 'Around the World In A Day' was the most expensive Frisbee they ever purchased, perhaps they'll have a little bit more affection for 'Parade'.

I know its pedantic BUT - thats already been mentioned - twice! "generally" a good idea to read through threads before posting! wink In case you can't be arsed, it was 'Prince is the black Beck'.

One stupid review I remember from Pitchfork Media where it slagged off Musicology, saying it wasn't as good as his 80s stuff, but it sounded 'dated', y'know, 'Nothing on here as good as 1999 or Purple Rain, the synths on A Million Days sound horribly dated like he hasn't updated his synths since 1982'.

But the worst bit was when they said that Prince sounded at his best on the album when he used a full band, like What Do U Want Me 2 Do? and Call My Name.

Both songs, of course, featuring just Prince, on his own.

I recall Entertainment Weekly doing an overview of Prince's albums. This was in 1990,right before the 'Graffiti Bridge' film came out. They dissed the 'Purple Rain' album!

soggy "rock" arrangements and the overblown title track bog it down, although a few gems---namely "When Doves Cry" and "Take Me With U"--shine

confuse

"[Chaos & Disorder] is the sound of an artist repeating himself badly" (Rolling Stone)

It might not be the most innovative or cohesive album Prince ever did, but it sure as hell isn't the sound of an artist repeating the same thing all over again.

I vaguely remember a review of Sign of the Times that was bad.

Amongst other things it stated that Housequake the song was a poor imitation of Word Up by Cameo. eek

It also accused him of trying to rip-off Springsteen on ICNTTPOYM!

What stupid motherfuckers! lol
When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

"This is the old (or) return of Top Shelf Prince"

It would seem some fool always puts that bullshit in some review every time the man comes out with another one of his crap albums.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.
You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

then why are you posting on a thread full of people with no lives (as of course most of us actually read through the posts!)??

Its only taken me a minute to reread all the posts. I didn't mean anything personal by it, but posts that repeat what someone just wrote two or three posts earlier are what clogs up threads in the first place!

the most ridiculous thing, in almost every single review is how they
start by calling him a midget a dwarf, the hip high hipster etc etc.

then they talk about the name change, about how he was a big star in
the 80's and went indie in the 90's how he went back to this label,
how he went back to that label, how he got married, divorced, had a
baby, got married again.

and then, in the last 4 lines, they discuss the new album, in which
4 lines they mention 26 pre 90's songs for comparison, lol.

leave out the 3 paragraphs of intruductory non sense and blabla about
his hight, his name change and his peak albums and just concentrate
on the album you're supposed to review for heaven's sake.

mad

A-fuckin'-men to that!

Plus all these reviews for 3121 and Musicology that heralded a return from "the wilderness" of the 90s - as if these reviewers even heard half the records from the 90s, because if they had, they'd be saying the aforementioned was, at least, following a similar flow, if not treading the same water as these albums.

Where were these reviewers when the Gold Experience was out? Where were they when TRC was out??
