Biggest Prince Disappointment? I ain't slagging prince I really dig "3121"- my fave since Gold. I'm just asking if you can describe that first moment you were truly disappointed with a new prince record. I remember how excited I used to be with EVERY release following "1999". Great anticipation. Then it happened. On the day before "Emancipation" I was at a used CD store and inexplicably they had the set before it was released! You can imagine how jazeed I was! I hurriedly took the CD to the listening station and popped it in. As I scanned through the bland R & B pop wannabe songs/production it was like the magic was gone. He just wasn't special anymore. I wasn't crazy about Chaos And Disorder but it was still Prince-like but "Emancipation" was so damn average. Then you had the infamous Crystal Ball mess...which turned out to be a letdown when the Sax version of "Crucial" and countless others wern't included..then NPS.....

My first disappointment was "Around The World In A Day". My biggest disappointment was "Parade". After that, I knew the albums were never going to be what they used to be so my hopes were not high and I was never disappointed again. However, I could have put my foot in his ass for "New Power Soul". Andy is a four letter word.

When I got Grafiti Bridge. I was like man get rid of half the songs and youve got something.
ALso I didnt like Lovesexy the first few listens. The lyrics were so corny and too relgious and there was no funky sex songs on that record. ______________________________________________

i love every P album up until emancipation which i thought was rubbish. then chaos came out an that was the final straw. i did'nt buy another P album till musicology and then 3121 which to me, especially 3121 seems to be getting back to the old P whoms music i loved all them years ago.

New Power Soul without a doubt. I still haven't recovered from that one. I never bought another new Prince album afterwards, except for Rave in 2001 in a sale. £2.99 was so cheap that I figured there wasn't much to lose.

Yeah, I said it! I can believe it. The only reason I wasn't majorly disappointed with it, is because I had previously heard clips of it on a radio show called "Radioscope" and knew it was late 1980s Prince as usual. With a name like "The Black Album", I would have been expecting pre-1985 "old Prince" like so many of my friends were. Andy is a four letter word.

Emancipation, without a doubt - I was so excited about a triple album and his new-found freedom, and I was hyping this up to everyone I knew, only to listen to it, and think "is this it?"

Listen to it again. If you still don't get it, listen again, and if you still don't get it I recommend suicide.

Agreed. In 1985 wouldn't you have just torn that up?

For me, it had a lot to do with first impressions...that first time you hear that new single on the radio. Imagine When Doves Cry, Rasberry Beret, Kiss, Sign O the Times, Alphabet St...
then Thieves in the Temple. Everything before it seemed otherworldy, going in a different direction, new...there was a sense of bewilderment at what this guy thought he was getting away with. Thieves sounded slick and perfectly executed, like he wasn't stretching beyond his means. Despite an average single, GB was the first album I bought on it's release date, the one that getting all those other albums created high expectations for, and I probably would have been disappointed if it was twice the album it was. It also beagan my personal habit of denial and looking for as many positives as I could possibly find in Prince's music, making excuses and exceptions for him. Began my wait for the 'second coming'. "I got the devil in me, girl." - 'John the Baptist', Afghan Whigs

Seconded with one small difference - I can't bring myself to listen to it at all. £1.99 for a copy of it in HMV (and I paid £19.99 on the day it came out) says it all, and is still £1.98 too much - a penny is a fair price to pay for three coasters and a spare CD case.

Graffiti Bridge. The album then the film.
I loved and got on the 1st day each album from 1999 to Batman. Graffiti Bridge was the first one to question my love of Prince.

Me too, I was so disappointed when I listened to it the day it came out that I didn't even buy it. I was ready to give up on Prince, hehe! Bought it years later for 8 euro and still hate it with a passion. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

1996-1998, Prince was very spiritual, and many of us were looking out for the next Lovesexy, and what did we get...
yeah, there were a couple cool songs but for me, the album was a huge disappointment [Edited 4/19/06 12:18pm]
