How long before "For You"... Punchdrunk's thread gave me the idea for this, so thanks mate! But what was your back catalogue route after u bought your precious first Prince album?...and how long was it before you got to "For You", the least appealing album
Respect to you if you were there from the get-go and "For You" was ur first I started with Lovesexy, then worked my way back to SOTT, then Purple Rain.... I got "For You" about six albums later WARNING: This thread may sink quicker than titanic

Respect to you if you were there from the get-go and "For You" was ur first I started with Lovesexy, then worked my way back to SOTT, then Purple Rain.... I got "For You" about six albums later WARNING: This thread may sink quicker than titanic His first four albums were among the last that I bought. I was profoundly disapponted with all four. However, with the exception of Dirty Mind, they eventually grew on me. Dirty Mind is far more unappealing than For You. For You won me over with its personal charm. gcu1 Just say "NO" to cow mucus consumption!

Dirty Mind was one of the first Prince albums I got and I loved it. The more I played it the more perfect it seemed to get. Every song on it is pricless - even 'Sister' which, though a screwed up concept, appealed greatly to me cos' it was so risque. DM is easily one of my top five albums. I got 'Prince' and 'For You' some time after. They were two of the last P albums I got - mainly because 'Dirty Mind' was considered the real start of the brilliance, while on 'Prince' and 'For You', Prince was just tuning up.

Hmmmm. . .started with Diamonds & Pearls [hard to believe how many years back that was now!]. After that, I didn't get any of the back catalog in any logical order. I think it was Purple Rain next and then I went to Sign O' The Times. I remember getting Dirty Mind and Controversy on a cassette together and listening to it in Colorado where I was working for the summer in 1993. By 1995, I had gotten everything on CD, but decided not to get the first two discs, simply because I thought that I had the best of them on The Hits/The B-Sides [I know. . .I was wrong].
I got the first two albums on used vinyl somewhere around 2000 and listened to them a few times. . .then, I finally picked up the first two discs somewhere in middle of 2002. I like For You a lot, but I would never say that it was better than Dirty Mind. [Edited 5/6/06 15:45pm]

Started with 1999, worked my way back to For You, then Purple Rain dropped and
I've been buying everything pretty much as soon as it's released ever since.

Purple Rain was my first. Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

Purple Rain was my first, then I bought 1999, then Dirty Mind. I was 14 and my Mom was becoming very annoyed at this point. Especially when she found the poster inserted inside the Dirty Mind album.

Did you not hear what he did on 1999 The New Master? I don't want him going anywhere near the rest of that album. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. More info at https://www.facebook.com/TMATSPodcast/

First full album was 1999, went back from there. Had all the back catalogue either by ATWIAD or Parade, can't remember back that far. I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it

The first one that I bought with my own money was Graffiti Bridge, but my older sisters had everything starting with the Prince album and I used to listen to those.
I honestly still have not bought For You. That album, along with N.E.W.S. are the only two I don't own yet. I don't know what I'm waiting on, "Crazy You" is one of my fvorite songs.

It was one of the last ones I got. I got for you and Prince around the same time. I think it was before Musicology came out. Christian Zombie Vampires

I think my first Prince album I bought was 'Diamonds & Pearls' on cassette, though '1999' and 'Purple Rain' were bought around the same time.
As for 'For You' - Still haven't got it. Never really heard it. Same goes for the 'Prince' album. I keep getting half-tempted to get 'em then something else more interesting always crops up. I'm probably missing out a little. I mean, some of his late '70s demos like 'I Miss You' and 'Donna' (correct me if I'm wrong these being late '70s) are really nice. And 'Bambi' from 'Prince' always kicks ass live. It'd be quite nice if P played revamped versions of a couple of obscure but good songs from his first two albums live sometime, just to give them 'recognition' in his story. I'll bet both his first two records are better than 'Musicology'

Started with Purple Rain, bought 1999 right away, then ATWIAD came out, and after that I bought his whole back catalogue in one Tower visit.

Started with 1999 and that's all I ever listened to and all I ever wanted to listen to. When I heard "When Doves Cry" on the radio/MTV, I had to get Purple Rain too. After I saw the movie, I wanted everything by Prince, so I bought Controversy -- loved it! Then I got For You, Prince, and Dirty Mind probably within the same month. Sheila E., Vanity 6, Apollonia 6, and The Time albums soon followed. I got the next several Prince albums on the date of release and kept up reasonably well, collecting ALL the singles, posters, buttons, magazine articles, associated artists (Jesse, Andre, Vanity, etc.), anything and everything. I was totally fanatical... so I stopped, took a good look at my obsession, and then I gave away my collection. Freedom! Meeting some cool friends during the Emancipation days kind of brought me back, but now I listen to the new stuff when I get a chance before forwarding it on to friends and family.
