Does anyone know? 7 has always been one of my favourite Prince tunes, although he's got so many great ones, that's a long list. I just recently noticed it was co written with Lowell Fulsom and Jimmy McCracklin. Does anyone know who they are and what their contribution was?

The bass line on 7 is sampled from their song "Tramp".
Check it out on numerous funk compilations. Great tune!!! -----------------------------------------------

Check it out on numerous funk compilations. Great tune!!! Funk compilations, yes, but old school listeners would consider both men more blues than anything else and then R&B, before funk. I love Otis Redding and Carla Thomas' recording of "Tramp." I only mention their bg in the blues because "whoknows" also asked who they were. Never trust anything spoken in the presence of an erection.

One more question. Why would Prince sample a bass line when he could just play it himself?

Probably just because it was funky. Maybe it was just one of his favorites & he decided to give it some play. This is Prince...WHO THE HELL KNOWS?
