Got everything from "For You" to "Lovesexy" on vinyl.

Me too, although I might have stopped the vinyl @ SOTT - I truly can't remember & ain't going in the closet to dig them out, lol.

A few 12" beyond that point, I think up to Grafitti Bridge (Thieves remix). 45's too (up to SOTT) & just recently bought a 45 just to get "Tricky".

I don't ever play them, replaced them all w/ CD's (though some of those 12" seem hard to come by). But the covers are sweet & I'll never sell them!

I still have cassettes too, up to Diamonds & Pearls.

Damn - that's the same collection 3 times over! heart Prince heart
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

Yeah, Vagina...I wouldn't ever sell them either.

If I came across one at a yard sale, or used album store...u know, I'd probably pick that one up 2, even if I already own it!

We r a sad yet fickle bunch!

as it were, this sunday i came across around the world in day (of which i already have 2 vinyl copies) and sheila e. in the glamorous life (which i also own on vinyl) at a sale in the hollywood hills. i take the albums up and pay $4, telling the sellers i saw sheila the night b4 in marina del rey. then the woman noticed the 1999 tattoo on my arm. "r u a prince fan?" she asked.

"a little bit," I grinned.

"u know the song slow love?" she asked.

"yeah."

"i wrote it."

i ran thru the prince history in my brain and offered up the following profound statement:

"davis?"

"yes, carol rafaelle davis," she answered.

we spoke 4 a few minutes, and i wandered away singing slow love 2 myself. i love l.a.
let me come over it's a beautiful day to play with you in the dark

Prince on vinyl is still a necessity, bearing in mind all the above releases have not yet been made available on CD.

I too have all the released Prince tracks and versions not available on CD (save for edits - I'm not a psycho collector), and they're great. I love digging out any number of the records giotto mentioned. The eighties remixes and extended versions of album tracks and b-sides are superb. I worry about wearing out the vinyl, but I just can't help putting on Sexy Dancer (Long Version) or the Pope remix.. 'a loop is a loop is a loop uh'. They're my two fave 12" records.

I also have a lot of the greater Paisley family on vinyl: Madhouse 8/16, JJ, The Family, Mavis Staples, Vanity and Appolonia. Unfortunately, all of these and my stereo too are 7000km away from where I now live and work...

The enjoyment of these releases is doubled by the fact that vinyl sounds so much better than CD. I am not an audiophile and my system is nothing special, but I can still hear a huge difference between the quality of the two mediums. To me, vinyl sounds softer, and it fills the room, whereas CDs sound harsh and the sound seems to emanate directly from the speakers. There's a certain warmth to putting on a crackly 17 days smile. The opening notes of The Family sound alive on vinyl but empty on CD.

I can think of two reasons why CDs sound inferior to vinyl. Humans can detect something like 3 million levels of sound, and anything squeezed into fewer levels will sound worse. CDs are limited to 16 bits, allowing only 65,536 levels of sound, an approximation which is jarring. Vinyl on the other hand can in theory replicate an infinite range of sound, and basically, that's a lot more pleasant to the ears.
The second factor is the frequency limitation of CDs. 44 KHz can handle frequencies up to 22 KHz, which I think is above human hearing, *but* any musical sounds above this range that may effect harmonics in the audible range are lost.

I'm not an expert, so please feel free to correct me on this.

Not to forget that record covers look great, and that they're a joy to collect smile. I became a P fan in 92, and started scouring the wrecka stows. I found a ton of vinyl in the UK in 1995.

Is Rainbow Children still available on LP anywhere?

you are very right about the harmonics and the frequency range of the human ear. i mentioned the same thing earlier in the thread. you may still be able to grab TRC from cdnow or amazon. i dont know though. i really am enjoying this thread!!

The Time:
'Ice Cream Castle'

Apollonia 6:
'Apollonia 6'

Sheila E.:
'Romance 1600', 'Sheila E.'

The Family:
'The Family'

Mazarati:
'Mazarati'

Jesse Johnson:
'Jesse Johnson's Revue', 'Shockadelica'

For a few years, I bought a lot of old albums, simply because I could find them for extremely good prices. I have most of Billy Joel's albums on vinyl and have yet to make the switch to CDs.

The last album I bought was Controversy off of eBay, simply for the shower poster (which I'll be framing this weekend). That's the only Prince album I have on vinyl, though.
I mean, like, where is the sun?

While I'm not a vinyl nut, I do appreciate the nostalgia that comes along with listening 2 a record on a turntable. It's almost like stepping in2 the past.

---

Here's what I liked about vinyl:

I miss the elaborate album covers that u don't get anymore with CD.

I miss the sleeves/jackets that the albums and 45's came out in...

I miss the lyrics on the jackets...the artwork, the credits. Although u still get them on cd, it's not as large or impressive...

I miss the "picture albums" u used 2 b able 2 buy...I still have a few.

I miss the smell of opening a double album...there's really nothing like it.

I even miss the "snaps and pops" u sometimes heard on an unclean album (sometimes).

Here's what I didn't like about vinyl:

I don't miss forgetting my album outside, or in the car and coming back 2 a warped mess.

I don't miss the scratches and skipping that comes with age.

I don't miss how easy it is 2 actually break an album or 45.

I don't miss having to lift the needle and placing it on the track u wanna hear.

I don't miss stacking albums or 45's on the "holder" so that when the 1st album ends, the next one drops down to play...damn...that's funny!

I don't miss the cost of replacing a needle...it was expensive then, and it's even more expensive now.

I don't miss all the room it took 2 place ur albums on the shelves...

---

Anyway...it's been fun reminiscing.

Hell ya, I've grooves upon the shelve deep purple concord jams on vinyl. Most of the Mix. has been made up of it.

The great thing about vinyl is that you can continue the song after it skips. You can 4get that on cd.
