Does Anyone Still Have Prince On Vinyl? ...and do u ever play it?
I have his "For You", "Controversy", "1999", "Purple Rain" and "Around The World In A Day" albums on vinyl. After that, I bought strictly CD, 4 the sound quality and "compact" cases. I have some 12" singles 2, from the release date...not the new ones they're putting out now 4 the DJ's (re-mixes). What do u have? |

...oh yeah, my other question.
I don't play them anymore, even though I still have a turntable. I guess convenience rules. |

Yes, I do have him on Vinyl. My friends and I still buy and collect him and others on Vinyl. We have all of his REleases and we would never SELL Them UNDER Any Circumstance. I haven't played them in awhile though. [This message was edited Tue Jul 23 10:44:06 PDT 2002 by Vagina]

I do like to listen on vinyl when I am relaxing, it's a different experience pulling out that black vinyl for it's sleeve, the Prince pics are bigger too.
I changed to CD's about a year ago, but still try and collect vinyl records as they are more rare. Vinyl PRINCE LP's I have: Minneappolis genius For You Prince Dirty Mind Controversy 1999 Purple Rain ATWIAD Parade SOTT Lovesexy Batman Graffitti Bridge Symbol The Rainbow Children I would like them all though..

Yeah, Vagina...I wouldn't ever sell them either.
If I came across one at a yard sale, or used album store...u know, I'd probably pick that one up 2, even if I already own it! We r a sad yet fickle bunch! |

You can't beat those gatefolds of Parade, ATWIAD etc. I love my prince vinyl. That Paisley Park logo too on SOTT etc just looks so cool when you stick it on the turntable. Vinyl makes everything seem more important and substantial. You look at the SOTT double album and you know its an important motherfucker kinda like Zeppelins Physical Graffiti on vinyl. They just scream classic album. I'd love the SOTT cover blown up and on my wall..

my entire collection is on vinyl pretty much and yes i definately play them. i am a dj who plays strictly vinyl.
i have over 400 pieces on vinyl. i have never sold or traded anything with anyone and i never will. i have vinyl releases from all over the world and it has been an ongoing thing since i was about 8 years old. i love it. i have close to 10,000 records now and i am totally in love with the idea of hunting for records and discovering something new on vinyl. as far as sound quality goes the whole cd/digital thing is such a misconception. our ears dont hear in digital so for people to make a big deal out of cd sound quality is just an audio illusion. if you have a good piece of vinyl and a quality stylus and stereo system the sound quality is so much better and warmer to the ear. all of the processing that goes into digital audio the human ear cant even pick up. those frequencies are totally out of our hearing range. anyway, this is a really good thread and i appreciate the replies. www.djdredd.com

I've got every album up to GBridge on vinyl and all of the 12" singles released.
I got a couple since- like Rave, but not much more...ruined my needle about 2 yrs ago and haven't bought a new one yet. BTW, needles are going for about $35 or more at the few places who still carry them

True dat djdredd, but u have 2 agree, the durability of the cd makes it a must have.
I choose 2 keep my vinyl Prince albums in plastic sleeves and tucked away in my cupboards. I play the shit outta my discs though, cuz u can. It's hard 2 scratch or break a cd. The same can't b said 4 the vinyl album. As far as quality sound...what about the "snaps and pops" u hear on the vinyl (that I love 4 nostalgic reasons) that u don't hear on digital. Crisp and clear is a sound quality. |

I have everything on vinyl that has yet to see the light of day on CD. Namely, all the really cool 12"s, containing things like the "Let's Work" remix and the extended version of "Sexy Dancer". Plus "God [Love Theme from 'Purple Rain']" which is a musical treat. This last one is a must!
Also, the b-side to "I Would Die 4 U", "Another Lonely Christmas", (note there are two different sounding versions of this, my favourite being the one off the black and white edition of this particular single). As for "I Would Die 4 U" itself, I prefer to listen to the full, unexpurgated version of the rehearsal that gave origin to this so-called 'US Remix'... Others that spring to mind and are worth having are all the singles off the "Around The World In A Day" album, gems such as the extended remix of "Paisley Park" with that cool sounding guitar, a superior version ,IMO,to what ended up on the album, as well as the full-length version of "Girl" plus the "Hello" remix.. And who can forget the full-length version of "America" and the two extended versions of "Pop Life"??? "The "Raspberry Beret" remix by Wendy and Lisa is another highlight from this period. The Parade singles are also worth having, if only for the extended versions of "Mountains" and "Anotherloverholenyohead" - as well as the extended version of "Love or Money" ( for completists, the version with the added Prince rap near the end is the best) The S.O.T.T. period also had its moments as far as extended versions are concerned, chiefly because of "U Got The Look", "Housequake[ 7 min. MoQuake]", the riotous "La La La, He He Hee" and the full version of "Shockadelica" (none of the above available on the Hits b-sides compilation). I can't say I'm too craxy about the "Hot Thing" remix, though... The 'Lovesexy' era produced some worthwhile moments too, with "This Is Not Music, This Is A Trip", as well as both "Escape" and the "Glam Slam" remix, which are all worth having too. So, yes, I don't doubt there are many out there who are still trying to track down the vast majority of these releases, if not all of them. Prince on vinyl is still a necessity, bearing in mind all the above releases have not yet been made available on CD. "You don't frighten us, English pig dogs. Go and boil your bottoms, sons of a silly person."

i have a question for all you vinyl heads...of all the prince/prince related vinyl you own, which is your favorite?
not favorite based on songs, but favorite based on packaging, lyric sheets, artwork, etc.? for me it has to be a tie between 1999 and SOTT. the 1999 labels had the pic of prince's eye right in the middle of the label where the hole is. do you guys remember that? of course you do. and the cover for SOTT is tight. www.djdredd.com

The characters on ATWIAD r so beautifully drawn, and the album opens out...very cool. I love the 12" releases on SOTT, especially the one's that have Cat on 'em. |

Special mention must go to the UK release of "Gotta Stop Messin' About" on 12". That shot on the front cover is just wild...
All the gatefold editions do it for me too, the "Around The world In A Day" album being a particular classic (pity about the CD version of this... no imagination whatsoever, Warners...) I also miss the graphics from the 'Purple Rain' album on CD. "You don't frighten us, English pig dogs. Go and boil your bottoms, sons of a silly person."

Crisp and clear is a sound quality. the snaps and pops will occur, but you just have to clean your vinyl. as far as durability...beware...cds will wear out as well. especially the early generation of cds that were made. a lot of my friends have had to replace a lot of their cds recently because of that. but hey...to each his own. i just love talking about this stuff. i could go on forever. take care and keep busting!

I have everything on vinyl (album wise) up till 'The Gold Experience' and nearly all 12" singles up to that period aswell.
I only buy vinyl now if its something thats quite rare or the odd picture disc that I don't have. I'm nothing like the collector I used to be. As for playing my vinyl, never. Some people are like Slinkies...
They're good for nothing but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

Yes, I have everything on vinyl up to SOTT, and some great singles.
I own the 12inch single of "Get Wild", and it is curious that you have to play it backwards, I mean, you put the stylus where the vinyls usually stops, in the inner circle. And the most curious thing is that I paid 0.60 euros for it long time ago in a Virgin store. -------------------------------------------------

I think with SOTT is when the 12 inches and B-sides began to suck. I have no extreme love for Shockedelica etc and This Is Not Music this is a trip etc., Escape etc...eccck!
