naw cause it wasn't a TRUE FUNK SOUND(i.e parliament).it was a funkier minneapolis sound so he would have wasted the songs.(2 much from 1 person at 1 time).best move he ever did was 2 put the times name on the album(even though he did all the work).

I think Prince didn't think the Time songs fit him as well as his alter ego, Morris Day. The Time and Vanity 6 was all party dance music and Prince seemed to want to play more than just that on his own albums. ______________________________________________

This is a dumb question. What idiot didnt know that all those songs the Time did were Prince? Who doesnt know that Prince was funky from "Soft n Wet" - way before the Time?

Doesn't it say in the Crystal Ball notres that Movie Star was written for The Time? Now IMHO I don't think I would love this song as much if Morris did it. I guess because I never heard it from him. To me The TIme is mor ea visual trip than musical. I enjoy them more when I can see them preform than to just sit down and listen to em. Anyway I just love it when P does a song for shits and giggles.

My high school years would have sucked if The Time didn't exist. Those songs were written with the concept of COOL, which Prince was not. He was a lot of things in those days, like sexy, erotic, thought provoking and new wave, but not COOL. The Time balanced out that musical explosion. Morris Day may have not written one song, but he was the coolest SOB on the planet in the early 80's.
Vanity 6, oh my goodness. Every high school kid in america had a boner for that group. I agree with the person who said The Time was a more visual group. I would say the same for Vanity 6. I could care less about the lyrics they were singing as long as I could see them. I think those times were Prince's true moments as an artist. He created and made two successful groups whose music and fame flourished at the same time his did.

I read from the book DMSR that Prince wanted a vehicle or band to explore his funk roots, He was concerned that if he put out this type of music himself he would be designated as a R&B artist only and be limited to R&B stations.
This way he could create that kind of music under the name Jamie Starr and allow him to explore and expand his career and reach into other genres of pop and rock audiences. "Say it Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud!!!" - Brother James Brown

thank you for the Intelligent Response this is why I asked this Question.Vanity 6, oh my goodness. Every high school kid in america had a boner for that group. Later. Much later. Because he wouldn't be allowed to release that music when he did. He would have had to wait to do so, risking not releasing them at all. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Honestly, I don't think Prince can funk as hard as the Time. Prince's appeal is in his diversity. Especially when he does sexy sweet songs. Then again, I don't take Morris and the Time too seriously on slow romantic songs. Their "ballads" have a ribald frat-boy edge to them. Like guys spinnin' yarns in a bar.
OK has this riled-up the fams? test

Well that actually doesn't make any sense really. It was mainly Prince laying down the music on those Time albums. I always thought the Time was a lightweight Funk band in comparison to Prince's live music in concert. But as far as putting on a show they could hold their own with anybody.

There are several Prince songs that were originally supposed to go to the Time...
***"Partyman"---written in 1982 for The Time ***"International Lover"

Don't forget those rare b-sides, such as "Grace" and "Tricky". On these you can actually hear Prince's own vocals (meant for Morris Day to sing over, which he never got around to doing). It demonstrates that Morris copied word for word, every nuance, inflexion and mannerism, as dictated by Prince.
Morris Day was the perfect foil for Prince and was able to carry the concept of "cool" in a much more believable way than Prince could have done. But let's not forget who masterminded the whole thing from its very inception. "You don't frighten us, English pig dogs. Go and boil your bottoms, sons of a silly person."

***"Partyman"---written in 1982 for The Time ***"International Lover" "Partyman" was funky but campy as hell. The TIME could do it easily, but i think of a little androgynous elf when I envision "Partyman". I think I just hate that BATMAN soundtrack too much. "International Lover" worked perfectly coming from Prince, but I had an g/f who used to strip to that tune so I'm biased. It's certainly got enough macho cool, so Morris and the boys could have easily pulled it off. test
