Usually I agree with you Isten, but for me the version on TCI is totally lifeless compared to the new one.

..TCI version seems kinda flat to me when compared to the 3121 version....I can't think of any of his recent songs that I've listened to repeatedly like I have The Dance...I've always dug his "moody" songs and I've put this one at the top of that list...

I like the vibe of the one on TCI a bit better, but I like the climax on the 3121 version. Let's Dance to it together, that would be a real climax. No More Haters on the Internet.

I love the song especially the 3121 version but i do agree that it is cut of too soon. It seems like it still has places to go. If u and I were just ten feet closer, then I'd make u understand

Why?" when he redid the Dance on 3121 but now I have to admit it is better...the song's really depressing and sad though...I have to be in the right mood to listen to it. This song HAS to be about a real woman because the emotion he convays is just to honest to be faked.
I have asked this more than once. (not you of course) Who do you think the song was inspired about? I have heard it was written during the Emancipation sessions. Is that true? I have always thought that any love song that talks about the woman of his desire dancing has to be about the dancer he married. I guess I am joining the camp that wishes Mayte and Prince could find their way back together again. Their pics together seem so tender and loving, not formal and staged. You know, honestly I've given up trying to guess which woman which song was written about...I belive it if I read it from a source I consider reliable...but other than that...he's had SO many girlfriends...so many that will never be known by fans...so just when you think you understand Prince you hear something that makes you realise you know nothing! But it is fun to guess I suppose...I always thought A million days was about Mayte...but the Dance...I don't know it could be any one of his women....I really don't think it was about miss garcia....but what do I know?

I prefer 3121 version. The best track on CD (the word, 3121 and fury R also great)
Today I listened TCI in my car for the 1st time again after the release of 3121 and I have to admit that The Dance was good but nothing special - not the strongest even on TCI! 3121 version's poduction is way better, also the vocals and the whole emotion (perfect ending also). but how to describe a perfect ang timeless Prince classic?

The Dance on 3121 is pure perfection. It's my favorite cut on the cd. I can't even imagine the other version being able to top it. [Edited 5/2/06 21:07pm] CO-SIGN

I haven't listened to TCI version in awhile so I did today.
It's very pretty but it's so much better on 3121. The dramatic instrumentation, the elegant piano and the way the song builds in intensity all the way to the anguished climax is just earth-shattering...whew! Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

co-sign i'm-a have to co-co-sign on this one... when i got TCI, i thought it was a nice enough track... but it wasn't something that i ever went back to again... on "3121," i can't listen to it without hitting the repeat button... i always have to listen to it several times... of course, the lyrics of the song are hitting closer to home for me now than they did when TCI came out... but i think prince performs it on "3121" with a lot more passion than he did on TCI... the piano solo is off the chain... but what i really like about it is the screaming at the end... and we haven't been treated to that in a prince ballad in quite some time... "baby baby baby it ain't fair, it ain't fair"... when he gets to that part... and then starts screaming, it almost brings tears to my eyes... i love that shit... fuckin' love it... "if i can't be your lover, i don't want to be your friend" indeed... Mr. Ellis Dee-licious, the Official NPGigolo
