Lolita lyrics: self-censoring?

"We'd be the sh...uh-oh!"

Is this supposed to be "We'd be the shit!" ?

If Prince is supposed to have such a problem with cursing, why can't he just think of a different line for that part instead of yet another awkward piece of self-censorship? It sounds stupid like this, and dare I say it, juvenile. Not unlike a 10 year old who wants to cuss but mom is listening. razz

You can't tell me Prince isn't creative enough to come up with a better line if he couldn't bring himself to sully his mouth with the dreaded S word.

I'm just thankful he didn't use "duck" instead of "fuck" again.....to me that may have been the low point of his entire career....or anyone else's career now that I think about it.

What is the point of it? Everyone hears "shit" or "fuck" in their heads anyway...we know what its meant to be. Apparently its OK for a Jehovas Witness to point to the way to an obscene word, to suggest an obscene word, to cause everyone listening to imagine an obscene word...just so long as he/she doesn't actually say it! WELL, TO YOU, PRINCE, I SAY THAT'S A PILE OF HYPOCRITICAL DUCKING SH...UH-OH!

The whole issue with not swearing is silly anyways. What the Bible condemns, since I assume this is where he and others get the idea, is taking the name of the Lord in vain. While that does include "Oh my God", "Damn it", "Jesus Christ" and all variations, it does NOT include, shit, piss, fuck, cunt, hell, etc. Those words can be considered rude at best, and probably not appropriate in front of grandma -but they're not actually curse words.

I wonder what excuse we'd use for the lil imp's nuttiness were he, say, a Leo or a Capricorn?

Really that can be seen two ways:

1. That he's making a point of pointing out that he will no longer use profanity. He's making a statement.
2. He simply found filler. I doubt this.

I would think it's the first of those. Especially since with #2, the word is still implied. We all fill in the blank.

Gemini compatibility with others with co dependence on background

Aries
Somewhat emotional and empathetic when leaning towards the Pisces & more argumentative when towards Taurus

Taurus
Sometimes feel bullied but they get over it

Gemini
Screwed over creepy as hell emotional & avoiding relationships

Cancer
Gemini’s think faster for the slower and more physical Cancers but they can do a lot of fun things together without having much of an emotional overload

Leo
Whatta klutz

Virgo
Whatta bitch

Libra
What honesty, I hate you.

Scorpio
How much fun! Such sneaky characters!

Sagittarius
Whatta argumentative dork, don’t like them but they r always in ur face

Capricorn
Getting fuzzy, cool people

Aquarius
Have something to talk about?

Pisces
Creative interdependence!

I gotta say, I kinda like the way this is done on Lolita.

I also reckon its done in a subtle way on love, with the line "Love is free from all this.....".

It's different, almost unique. I'm sure Prince knows what most of us will hear. It will make a difference to be able to hear a full song on radio rather than all those gaps, or the radio edits James Blunt brought out.

PS - The line itself is "Long time ago, we'd be the shhh... uh oh!". Its Princes way of pointing to how he used to swear, and no longer does. Just the sort of thing Prince does, I reckon

Jeez, it's just a joke! You think Prince is going to swear... then he doesn't. That's what's funny, like he knows there's all these people on this thread who are desperate for him to swear again!

The other thing is, avoiding swearing means you avoid the parental advisory sticker marring the front cover and it can be played on the radio.

Gwen Stefani says 'shh' on the radio friendly version of Hollaback Girl too.

I still think it's stupid. If you don't wanna swear, just don't do it. shrug

Me too!

Using the beginning of a curse word is much better than a lame substitute.

From the first time I heard it ...I thought ..oh, so he learned something from working with Stevie Wonder on 'What the Fuss'....cause Stevie overly pronounces the F and it sure sounds like he's about to say WHAT THE FUK!

Prince played on that song ...I'm convinced he got the idea for 'we'd be the sh--!" from that.

(love that line in Lolita by the way!...and well as the Frank and Ava iconic reference).

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.
