Why is The Rainbow Children STILL kicking my ass!?

I listened to this album at least 50 times since its release and each and every time I realize another layer - a bit more here; another aspect there - that blows me away.

Lyrically, muscially, technically...a masterpeice in every way. It tells me that great art doesnt age or fade. Therein lie sthe true power of art: it lasts 4ever and touches you in many times over many years in many ways.

Beautiful

I haven't listened to it in its entirety in months (because I've worn it out to an extent), but I have listened to individual songs here and there lately. You're right; I continuously hear something different I didn't pick up before in most of the songs too. All the great albums I own have that in common.

Which is a really good thing...

Hey, there r a few really good songs on it...but I don't love it like ATWIAD or SOTT. I guess the "narrator" voice still annoys me. I can dig the dialogue, just not that low, speaker throbbing, overly enhanced voice he used.

Not 2 b flamed or anything...just giving my opinion.

I'm diggin' One Nite Alone more.

I agree, The Rainbow Children is an incredible album! I try 2 listen 2 it almost every day...and I still get a great vibe and NRG from the entire experience. The ecclectic blend of music makes it extremely deep and rewarding. Of course the fact that it is a Prince album makes this all totally understandable...Live 4 Love KFUNK

I think the album should have been recorded LIVE. The songs, to me, sound much better live than on CD. And as many people have said, the narrator, the Wedding Feast...a little too much for me.
If it breaks when it bends, you better not put it in.

Shit--it sounds like one of his more live on the spot recordings than all the overdubbed official releases...TRC is as live sounding studio as you gon' get imho.

I'm willing to bet it wouldn't bother any of them if they played 'Bob George' off The Black Album ...

Ditto. I think it adds to the whole feel of the album.

Believe it. It's enough to make it a seriously flawed work in myeyes.
(we won't even go into "Wedding Feast")

Basically a voiceover narrator is seen to interpret flaws in the narrative flow.
Filmmakers who use the device probably have too much exposition in their scripts
and dialogue. Film is a visual medium. You show your characters doing things instead
of describing it. I'm admittedly applying the same rule here. The theme should flow fine
without the narrator. Also it's bad enough in that slowed down "BOB GEORGE" voice. It was
cute once, but it's quite tiresome now.

Did I not grouse about the single track index? This bugs me to no end. There are
times I want to play cuts and not the whole damned thing. It deserves a ding for that too.

the ad-libs are spoken in a very heavy annoying voice so it ruined the entire album.

Would you rather it had been narrated in a camp, shrinking violet, Kenneth Williams kinda voice, perhaps???

The Narrator Voice could of been left out of the audio and simply printed between the lyrics on the CD booklet. I wish I could hear it either way.

I listened in the dark with excellent headphones a couple weeks ago and loved it totally. I was getting a little tired of it for a while last spring. But it blows away any other music I have heard from any other Artist this year.
I hope it gets nominated for a Grammy~

Most People would of thought I was tripping on something if I said Steelee Dan would win Album of the year. Especially if I mentioned it early that year. I actually was thrown back about that, maybe they really do pay attention to musicanship. If Prince could win a grammy for an Album, would'nt that be a good foot hold on a comeback.
