Pearl Jam on SNL vs. Prince on SNL

I had to laugh watching Eddie Vedder try to play 2 notes on guitar last night, and "try" to sing without opening his mouth, what a friggin mumbler that guy is. Eddie has this look like hes the savior of rock and roll. I couldn't help but compare it to Prince's performance. It's amazing what passes for talent, and how much a talent like Prince can be overlooked.

Yeah, white boys can get away with alot less talent. It's always been the case. Little Richard,Chuck Berry were superior in several ways to anyone else of their time. The difference is, guys like Elvis and Buddy Holly were superior to them in at least some categories. Nowadays, white boys can get away with posing and screaming.

Well, these days??Talent doesn't mean anything anymore. Anyone with a nice face and some push behind them can be forced upon the public. But yes, white boys generally have an advantage in marketing as they do in all segments of american society, statistics, history, sociology all verify this.

Pearl Jam went nutters just like Prince did. Mega fame does that to a person. I remember Pearl Jam went on their crusade against Ticketmaster, just like Prince took on Warners.

Pearl Jam was the biggest thing in the 90s, alongside Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins--but all those acts flamed out. That decade failed to produce any enduring acts--a 70s redux, lots of angry white music, ghetto black music, but a golden age for movies--and Pearl Jam is one the few that survived with a respectable body of work.

well said, if anyone gets the chance to check out their MTV Unplugged performance from 93 or 94, you can see a truly brilliant band in action.

i agree that saturday night was... not very entertaining, but Pearl Jam is still a very talented group of people.

I agree with some points made there, but hell, I didn't know about their bout with Ticketmaster. The problem with that is, who didn't hear about Prince's falling out with WB? That was all over the place.

I've never had any real 'like' about PJ, sans just acknowleding their existence, but I mean, really....Prince was put out there as if he was the court jester, just ready to receive any flack over being David vs. Goliath.

A friend of mine who's a huge Pearl Jam fan, recently sent me an article to read and highlighted the part below:

In fact, there isn’t another rock band in the world today that can lay claim to the following: the ability to sell out multiple nights in an arena in a major-market city (which is the equivalent of selling 60,000 tickets to 60,000 unique fans in a single town), yet somehow be deemed “unpopular” or “irrelevant” by the mainstream press.

I responded to him that actually that paragraph could apply to Prince. I guess us P fans aren't the only ones that feel "our" artist doesn't get enough respect!

As both a Prince and a Pearl Jam fan, I can say that both SNL performances are somewhat parallel. P kicked ass with "Fury", and struck out on the second song. As did PJ with their current single "Worldwide Suicide".

As far as the earliest comment, while Eddie Vedder is not by any means a lead guitar player, those who dis Pj should check out their Vs album.

Pearl Jam is awesome. I don't however think Eddie Vedder compares to Prince by any means!
