Best Song from the Plastic Prodution Period

For me it has to be "U Make My Sun Shine" or "Strange but true"

neutral This was the period that I really lost interest in Prince, except for concerts.

I think "strange but true" sounds very plastic but somehow
it totally works for that song. It doesn't pretend to be a
thing that it is not, it simply makes the best use of them
plastic samples and keys he chose to use at the time.

"When I Lay My Hands On U" is another great one but one of
my favs from that plastic era is "Sadomasochistic Groove".

Prince had some strong material released during that era!

I forgot to mention "Wasted Kisses". It must be the best Hidden track ever!

Can we establish the era?

Is it 96/99? Starts with Emancipation and ends with Rave (cuz I sure wouldn't want to describe anything on The Rainbow Children as plastic.

To, to me, probably Wasted Kisses and The One; they still end up on the Prince compilations I make these days...

Awww, that to me, is the epicentre of all I thought was wrong with prince's music output. What a waste of studio time...

yeah, but then there are songs like "I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore"
which is a dumbfoundingly non-plastic song in an era of plastic overflow..

so is the criteria that it has to be a plastic song which can still be on
the shortlist for the prince greatest songs compilations?

You know i was listening to Supercute yesterday and i was thinking god this sounds so shit musically but i still love it. Can you imagine this being recorded with NPG band of 94. So my vote goes to Supercute, with Strange But True worthy follow up.

i'm sorry, i don't understand my own question either. all i wanted to know
is if the non-plastic songs from the plastic era qualify as being chosen for
this shortlist or wether they are excluded for want of polystyrene properties

Supercute, I love you but don't trust you, these are some of his best songs ever, he always has a few gems, in every time period. Don't you all consider much of Graffiti Bridge to be tupperware style production? The production of Pandemonium? that's definitely tupperware...

I understand why people often refer to the production of this era as sounding "plastic", but I don't understand the all the negativity around it.

To me, this era was Prince getting away from the organic/ band oriented sound of the early 90's, and returning to his one man synth stuff. Sure, the synths sound more cheap and inorganic than a band. However, the same could be said about Prince's early 80's synth sound.

We Prince fans may deem that early 80's synth sound as "classic" but, it actually sounds just as cheap and artificial as the so called "plastic sound production" of 1996-1999. Hell, half the production of "Rave" was using the same linn machines and effects as those beloved early 80's tracks. I think this is another glaring example of Prince fans bias and over embellishment of the 80's.

Again, the late 90's synths were no more cheap sounding than the early 80's synths.

- Well, it was the time I really lost interest on Prince, and seriously considered giving up as a fan. I remember I was extremely happy when somebody gave a great review about TRC and I knew Kirky J was out!
I agree, the synths were present on most of 80s music. But back then, Prince used them with great taste, in an innovative way. The Kirky J songs sounded plastic, lifeless... About ´Rave´ I agree...some of my fave songs used the Linn (Undisputed and Pretty Man)

I think Rave was meant to be cheezy in spite of cheez.

The 80s WAS cheez cuz that was the 80's for ya, ya know? Cheez is of the 80's. Rave was cheez wiz, if you will.

But the music he created in the 80`s sounded somehow more funky and raw. Just compare Kiss with Strange but true, and Housequake with Undisputied. Of course it has to do with songwriting as well.

The songs you are comparing aren't very good for comparison. Those songs are apples and oranges--not the same type of songs. The synth lines in "Strange but True" are cheesy, they are straight out of the Dirty Mind era. You can't compare that to the stripped down sound of "kiss". Same with "Housequake" and "Undisputed". "Housequake" is an uptempo, horned out, James Brown type live/funk jam. The is not what "Undisputed" is supposed to be. Undisputed is more mechanical in it's rhythm and delivery.

Okay how about comparing "Undisputed" with, say, "Dead On It"? Both tracks are what I'd call some of the weakest of the era, but "Undisputed" more clearly shows where he had gotten seriously wrong stylewise. Especially with his sense of humour - of course on the same record and on its finale, "Prettyman", his comedy licks are back on full fire there. So yeah, you can't totally rule out any of Prince's records as complete failures.

And my choice for the best song from 96-01 would have been "In This Bed I Scream" too.
