For me, the biggest turn-off in hearing these is the band of the time. I've thought for many years that the '96-'99 songs themselves aren't too bad, but the Kirky J-sound is just weak. Rather than re-recording the WB catalogue in '98-'99, I wish he had re-recorded the NPG Records catalogue in '01-03 with the ONA band. Then we would have re-discovered some real hidden gems. - Agreed! Or maybe if Prince re-recorded his catalogue playing all instruments..it would be cool also

One can only hope that Prince re-masters "New Power Soul" - let the world see the genius of "Freaks on this Side"!

The Dance also appears on The Chocolate Invasion released through the NPG Music Club in 2004. The new version is a lot better. The end of the current version is amazing.
Next question is when & where did the original "the Dance" come from? That's my favorite 3121 track right now so I MUST KNOW![/quote]

Are Lovesexy and Gold Experience still over-produced or did he strip them down? He 're-interpreted' most songs, some more radically than others. But there were a few songs which he said just didn't sound right unless they were pretty much done the same way as the original (Sign Of The Times was one of those songs) - I hope this ´re-interpretation´ was more raw and timeless. I think it would be great if Prince did some great basic arrangements for these songs, with live band sound. It would make the songs more timeless IMO and people would focus on melody more (like it happened on ´Strange Relationship´ ONA tour). The synths made his 80s catalogue ´dated´ for most people.

the biggest problem about dealing with electronic stuff/technology is that it tends to get outdated more easily. For example: I am listening to ´Love´ and I love it, but in 10 years, it will probably be very outdated.
On the other hand, if u listen to Duke ellington song or Led Zeppelin, you know it´s old, but in a ´cool´ way, because people still play with the same live instruments today

In some dark corridor of my mind I have a recollection from around 2001 or so of Prince having mentioned some remastered or re-recorded songs and specifically talked about John Blackwell's drumming on Witness for the Prosecution. I'd like to hear that one!!!! When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

I know! I can't imagine it would be a fun process for him - he's already done it... time to hear some new stuff! Although, I wouldn't mind hearing some Little Red Corvette with some Doug E. Fresh and Chaka!

Do you think Warner Bros cared if Prince re-released his albums? I personally don't think anyone would care... there might be some incremental sales associated with a Prince new master, but I don't think the general public would care (unless he included new songs on each album, etc....like Garth Brooks did...sorry for you non-country folk...)
