if he still had the original tracks for all instruments on each song it would not be much work at all since he could basically just "remaster" his entire catalogue and just replace for instance the bassline in a song or the guitar licks etc for it to constitute a new master.

If anyone is familiar with, for example, Frank Zappa's "Hot Rats" CD version and the original LP version then you get a basic idea of what Prince did with most of his "New Masters"...
And if anyone heared the "new master" version of "Kiss" (Extended version) then you know it's not all that bad (but I have a feeling he did that one long before he thought up of the idea to re-record his music to fuck with WB...)

No, in 1993 he was already "re-recording" some of his hits (of course not literally re-recording the songs because for some songs he just lifted older/different takes of his basic tracks...)

If 1999 the new masters is anything to go by, then it's not rerecording, it's pure fucking genocide, fullstop! tonk
But you could be right, ahhh, mmmm, yeah, maybe he's busy rerecording Rainbow Children now, that's why he's completely ignoring 3121 (until he rerecords it in 2009)

Funny, you would think with Purple Rain being his biggest era ever, if he has rerecorded the album, maybe he should have released it in 2004 for a twentieth anniversary, and actually made some money off of that 2 years of supposed rerecording (that you have the sheep believing in)... But no... hmmmm... hmmm

So let's sum this up: he rerecorded 20 plus albums (because the inside man Boris said he did) (and apparently Prince said it too, and we all know how reliable and so-not-full-of-paisley-propaganda that makes it!) and released only the wildly successful 1999 new masters, then vaulted the rest after all that bitter "i'll teach you warner bastards" hard work??

I guess I'm the only one who would not be thrilled with a project like this boxed

I will only buy remasters of the albums the way they were originally recorded. For the most part,I don't like "new" versions of old songs.Remember that awful "1999" New Master crap?

Here is the problem with that. It took Prince 27 years to record his entire catalog in the 1st place.

what new master extended kiss? "I never saw this!"

After the first celebration when everyone voted for the tracks which would end up on "Crystal Ball II" (on which this version of "Kiss" was included) there was a party at Paisley Park where this song was "premiered"... And then, of course, it got shelved...

It took him 27 years to conceive, compose, arrange, and record it.

But the 1999 "new master" was mostly made up of the "old master." He just slapped a new beat, short rap, new lead vocal, and the bit at the end.

Still a big task to do the whole catalog, but not as complicated as re-recording it all from scratch (not to mention writing it).

Man, I guess Prince could sit your ass down in the vault and hand you a big
stack o' New Master tapes, and you'd still be like "No way, I don't believe
you actually re-recorded this stuff. I think these tapes is all just blanks!"

The fact that Prince says he's done it, NPGMC says he's done it, Rhonda, Larry,
Morris, Kirky, Marva, Rev, The Hornheadz and others have all said they've played
on most of the tracks, and Hans Buff and Femi Jiya engineered most of the
sessions don't count for jack? Jeez, whaddya want? A personal invite from Prince
to PP so you can listen to each and every one of the tracks to know for sure?

Interesting...i was thinking about it today.

In one hand I think his classics shouldnt be touched...songs like ´When doves cry´ had an unique sound.

But on the other hand, most of his catalogue sounds dated because of those 80s synths and electronic drums. I think it would be interesting if some live band recordings surfaced after he died. Then people would see how great the songs are instead of thinking ´argh, it´s 80s music´.

Apart from 1999NTM and Soft and Wet ( confirmed in the late 90´s ) and those Muppets songs , which other re-recordings have been confirmed up to now?

I don´t doubt your info I´m just curious.

Prince confirmed that he'd finished the lot in 1999/2000 (I can't remember
exactly when). If you're aware of Soft and Wet being re-recorded I'm surprised
you didn't know this, as it was the final song to be re-recorded (ironic,
since it was the first single). It was announced online that Prince had just
finished recording Soft and Wet, and that it was the last 'new master' to be
committed to tape, and the project to re-record every track from every WB album
was now complete. They had a big (private) wrap party at Paisley Park to
celebrate the completion of the project. They also mentioned that Larry had to
leave the room when Prince re-recorded some of the more 'explicit' old
material (I think they were talking about some of the Dirty Mind album 'new
masters' there... 'Head' and 'Sister' spring to mind).

Prince soon abandoned the idea of releasing 'new-master' versions of every
album as originally intended. But there were a few occasions where it looked
like a 'best of' collection of some of the 'new masters' might see the light
of day.

I would say it is safe to say that Prince did actually re-record the lot, but the vast bulk of it was probably done in a short period of time in 98, (eg, when he was mouthing off about it on NPGMC), with a predominately live band (like the Purple medley). The rest was made up of general re-recordings between 92-97.

There are a few facts that point towards this:

1. Femi was brought back for the specific job in that period.

2. The current band said there were involved.

3. Prince was obviously not bothered about the band being on previous solo material.

4. Morris was freshly back in the fold to a greater degree in 98.

5. Prince starts mouthing off on NPGMC.

6. Prince's attention span is way too short for this to last!

Personally, I would love to hear new versions, particularly of the first few albums, as I always have the old ones as well.

However, the influence of the band at that period of re-recording is a worry.

Anyway, this is all OLD NEWS.
The 'new master' recordings were all done and dusted over 5 years ago.
It's all just another project sitting in the vault, with no release likely.
I don't know why people are all so worked up about it all.

I think the releasing of 'New Master' versions of every WB album was a bad idea
(and I think Prince realised this, or at least realised that WB would still be
able to block or otherwise effect their release).

However, after that part of the plan had blown over, Prince still had a load of
new versions of old tracks sitting around, so there were at least a couple of
instances where it looked like we might get a 'best of' these New Masters
released instead.

IMO, this could've been quite interesting, especially if he picked the tracks
that were re-recorded radically differently to the original versions. Like
when he'd do acoustic versions or radically reworked versions of songs live.

Any idea if the '95 version of Starfish And Coffee was later used as part of this New Master project, or if he then re-recorded it again?

For me, the biggest turn-off in hearing these is the band of the time. I've thought for many years that the '96-'99 songs themselves aren't too bad, but the Kirky J-sound is just weak. Rather than re-recording the WB catalogue in '98-'99, I wish he had re-recorded the NPG Records catalogue in '01-03 with the ONA band. Then we would have re-discovered some real hidden gems.

I agree. That's the only gripe I have about the New Masters... the time period
they were (re)recorded in was my least favorite era for Prince musically, and
unfortunately I suspect a lot of the New Masters would reflect this. If they
had been recorded prior to this (Gold era NPG) or more recently (ONA band) then
I'd be much more interested to hear the results.

There is no way he would be able to recreate some of the accidents and settings on old equipment that created those songs... these new ones would be very different, and probably also sound very generic.... kareoke style I would fear... I want them destroyed. NOW.

Ugh, if that's not enough to put you off, I don't know what is... Strange thing is, though, the Purple Medley was recorded during one of his strong periods - when he was still recording a lot with the Gold-era NPG. In fact it was released only weeks before Exodus (the same day as the videocassettes of The Undertaker and The Sacrifice Of Victor), while he was touring in Europe. Oh, good times...
