How does the Prince of today as a studio artist match up with his peers? Obviously, this being a Prince site, we're all pretty much of the consensus that Prince was peerless in the 80's. Totally unmatched with his albums.
How do you think Prince fares today though? Is he really a better studio artist today than Muse, Damiem Rice, Radiohead, NIN, Beck, etc? I'd say no, mostly because I don't think has been able to keep up with his producing. Aside from TRC, which was produced magnificiently, it's been the most glaring problem with most of his albums of the past ten or so years. It sounds more evident as a shortcoming when you listen to albums today that were produced really well (like Guero). Not to say that Prince sucks in the studio these days, or that he isn't a million times better than the typical hacks like Usher and Justin Timberlake. He most certainly is. As a live act, Prince is still God, but can he really match up in the studio anymore? The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I would like to see prince step aside from producing and get some one else to do it (apart from the NPG).....
I just think he need a close band like "The rev.." so he gets new ideas, instead of doing everything himself.... But...Im happy with everything in 00's, TRC the best produced album since the 80's?? or ever in prince's case!! Keenmeister

TRC aside, Prince seems to have run out of ideas completely, with regards to producing, a long time ago.
Right now, I don't see any harm in seeing what a producer could do with him on a new record - BUT, Prince being Prince, he'd pick the latest R&B producer, or one he could afford that bended his ear enough to convince him he could do what the hit-makers do, but cheaper. THAT would horrible, the last thing Prince needs IMO is the R&B name of the moment. I doubt Prince would give up control to another any way, but if he did, I'd hope it was someone like Morgan Geist, or the people behind such outfits as Isolee, Chab or Booka Shades.... Looking more commercially, even Stuart Price or Felix da Housecat for God sake..... Anyone who could inject a bit of life and introduce something new to Prince and that he couldn't emulate to a T without soaking them in first.

I think the whole producer argument is just plain silly, music isnt about the production its about THE MUSIC, you dont have to have techno futuristic beats to have good music. Prince should always produce the music himself, if the Neptunes or whoever produced prince it would b absolutely dreadful.

Production is a part of that music. Imagine 'Fury' produced rawer, without the glitz, with dirty, rough guitars and feedback.

If Prince's peers are modern day musicians, he doesn't match up with them. He's lacking.
Even Prince sizing up to himself as a Peer, he's weak. However, Prince doesn't really have peers to match up with. News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so. You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

Production is a part of that music. Imagine 'Fury' produced rawer, without the glitz, with dirty, rough guitars and feedback. Yeah, but now you're trying to re-write the song itself! The complaints about "Fury" you site here have absolutely NOTHING to do with the production quality. It's more about the arrangements and flow with you then anything else. IMO, as was stated before...the producer argument is very silly to me. Either you like the music itself, or you don't. A songs production value will do very little to change that either way. Just my 2 cents. Strike
