That's real interesting Vaindaddy. Cats would actually brawl over P and Rick??
The chicks were hip to Prince early on in the game, but it took a while for the dudes to catch up with P. They couldn't get hip to his bikini briefs. (lol) By the time "1999" and Vanity 6 were on MTV, and in all the "rock-soul" mags, everyone kinda caught up with him and the jokes stopped. And we all know what happened after "Purple Rain".

When P was on tour with Rick James, it was promoted as Rick vs. Prince...even though he was the new kid on the block, it was well known that P came out as the winner. I know, because I was at that concert and that was all everyone was talking about. I was only 10 but I vividly remember that being the climate during that time. By the time the 1999 tour rolled around in 1983, folks were losing their minds over P. They had to keep adding shows for the Motor City. There had to be at least 6 shows at the Masonic Temple, some were a tmidnight. I remember going to the box office with my friend to get tickets and being so disappointed when they sold out while we were waiting in line. Fortunately, he came back a few months later and were were able to see him at the Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor. Where are the org Motor City Babes? I know there is someone out there that can back me up on this. [Edited 4/28/06 9:58am] I lived in Toledo. I don't remember the specifics but I do remember the WJLB radio would announce added shows due to popular demand. I saw the 1999 tour as well, in Toledo, at the Sports Arena. Those were the days. The music was coming out so fast, that I am not sure if the concert I saw the Controversy tour, 1999 tour or the triple threat tour (minus Vanity 6). Controversy was still charting, 1999 had just blew up on RB radio and purple rain was probably in preproduction stage.... because about a year later, the film opened. Prince would have SEVERAL hits charting on the Jet magazine 20 top singles chart. And he would be in the top 5 albums... all at the same time. Vain was right, no matter how gay looking Prince dressed, nobody thought he was gay because he had those bad azz women hanging on his arm. I was in the seventh grade and was absolutely furious when I couldn't go to that concert....both my favorites at the same show, Rick and Prince. Very true. I couldn't go to the Prince vs Rick James either. (I never got a chance to see Rick live ) I saw the tour Prince, The Time, and Roger/Zapp (Vanity 6 did the shows in Detroit, but didn't come to Toledo). I was a sophmore in high school, and the only reason my mom let me go was because I told her I was going to see The Time. Which I really wanted to see anyway. (loved the time). But Prince really was the show. wasn't that big of a fan until I saw him live. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack

No fucking way, to put it mildly. Im 22, does that mean I only get to be a fan of artists around in my day? No THANKS! They all suck! Because, in case y'all have forgotten, its about the music. Yes culture is important, but unfortunately we cant all be quite as special as to be a thirtysomething preaching to the converted about who loves Prince more!
Its about the music people., Music transcends time. Do you argue with kids who like the original Star Wars Trilogy, or Bach? NO! You admire them for having the balls to get out of their little MTV cushioned box and see the rest the world has to offer. Give us a break. Rant over

The only reason to create such a group would be to shield other fans from the cranky ways of some of the veterans. Thankfully, many of the cranky people have moved away from the Prince forum (to the GD or P&R forums) or stopped posting altogether. Some of them where acting like they were Prince scholars at Prince U. and snapping at anyone who asked a question. Granted, there are some questions that are asked much too often, but for that you can direct them to the FAQ politely (and helpfully).

Gimme a break. Fifteen years ago, I was almost 8. You gonna shut me and others out for not being old enough to remember the "Purple Rain" era? Be glad there are people here who are my age or younger who appreciate good music and may actually know something about it. We'll be able to pass that knowledge to our children, just as my parents did for me. [Edited 4/28/06 10:24am] You said it all. Cosign.
