U Make My Sunshine interpretation I've always assumed Prince was referencing a prostitute or a stripper in this song until I heard it differently tonight. I considered that it could be about a "kept" woman who is given money but not love or respect by her man.
I suppose it's all speculative but what does everybody else think? [Edited 3/14/11 3:05am] [Edited 3/14/11 3:07am]

Whoa! Cool. I never thought about it that way before. But I always thought it was about a stripper.

I suppose it's all speculative but what does everybody else think? I've always wondered if this song was about facts or assumptions by Prince. What might look like "kept woman" could actually be an underpaid female trying to break free from a hopeless marriage. On the average a woman makes one half to three forths less than what a man is paid. Is it possible that she wasn't 'kept' as much as she was imprisoned? A futile battle to try to get ahead financially in a male dominated world makes it very difficult for women to make it on their own. It's true some women can turn to postitution or ways to position themselves to bring in a fortune in other ways. A woman with a sincere true heart might have a much harder time bringing the bucks in with a regular job paying minimum wage.
