Okay, so I'm sitting here trying to seriously pinn myself to one era (good definitions, btw) and I can't choose one. I have faves in each era. Is that what makes you a true fam?

- I would put Batman and Graffiti Bridge in the ´end of decade´ era...more of a transition between the SOTT/Lovesexy and NPG...it´s funny that Prince seems to do his weakest albums in the end of a decade (NPS and Rave in the 90s)

About the ´shitty music´...I would say that Diamonds and Pearls and Symbol have indeed great songs. Ok, I dont like Tony M, but when it comes to SONGS, they had some powerful ones: Love 2 the 9s, Damn U, Money dont matter 2night, Live 4 love, Gett off, Morning Papers, etc. I would say that the ´plastic production´ era = ´shitty music´

Here is where I see the different eras Also, each era really segues into the next. Often and ideas begin in one era and move to the center of focus in the next. This is true with Prince's production, imagery, fashion, and lyrical motifs.

The Beginning

For You
Prince

The MPLS SOUND

Dirty Mind
Controversy
1999
Purple Rain (the culmination of this sound/era)

The Paisley Era

Purple Rain
ATWIAD
Parade
Sign O' The Times (still heavily influenced by The Revolution)

The Lovesexy Era (Prince is a spirit child)

The Black Album
LoveSexy
Batman
Graffiti Bridge

The NPG ERA

Diamonds and Pearls
prince
The Hits

The prince or Slave Era

Come
The Gold Experience
Chaos and Disorder

The Emancipation Era

Emancipation
New Power Soul
Rave
High/NPGMC Trax

The Rainbow Children ERA

Rainbow Children

That's actually the BEST breakdown I've seen! The other posts show too much bias for an era on the part of the fan defining it. Plastic Production Era for me would define the entire 80s from Dirty Mind through Batman with the cold, lifeless, cheap 80s synth and cassio drum machine sounds. Graffiti Bridge marks the end of that era with a superior, warmer 90s sound production. Another example would be the Shitty Music Era which for me would be the pre-1999 albums when the music was inexcusably SHITTY! Or I might call it the "What the Fuck was he Thinking Era" or possibly the "Lame Rookie Era" but that may or may not impose my bias on other fans.

Good Man, Skywalker! You cut right through the bullshit with an entirely objective categorization which I think I will continue to use. CHEERS!

Thank you. By the way, I originally mis-spelled "lovesexy" so you might want to change it in your quote.

The only things I really altered was adding Xpectation to The Rainbow Children era and crossing over Graffiti Bridge the same way you crossed over Purple Rain. GB may be steeped in the late 80s because of it's origins, but the sound production to me is the beginning of the "warm & fat" 90s style of production. I also added Goldnigga to the NPG era and Exodus to the Slave era.

I was about to break it down until I read Skywalkers, which was virtually identical to mine.

The only difference is I was about to lump the NPG era with the Slave era. There's a significant difference in spirit, hence his more logical breakdown, but musically (Come aside) I might label them Michael Bland era.

Bnah... hmmm

The Black Album

Lovesexy
Batman
Graffiti Bridge

... three distinct eras. Altough Lovesexy could be also seen as belonging to the same continuation as SOTT too.

Yeah xpectation--I forgot about that album. I totally agree with you that Graffiti Bridge is actually the beginning of the NPG era. However, although it introduces the new band and sound, it is kind of his final kiss off to his "lovesexy" spiritual phase. That's what is so cool about Prince, you can see the progression from one album to the next. Like a pieces of a pizza it all fits.

Hey Skywalker....if you had to confine Purple Rain to one or the other, where would you put it? I know it's a Revolution album, but it's such a party record and I can't help but identify it with 1999. Whereas ATWIAD seems like the beginning of a more artistic direction.

GB did start a new era of production; it's a big step forward after Batman. But it's mostly a one man show--aside from the guest singers--like Batman.

The New Power Generation wasn't yet a band, it was still more of a concept like it was in Lovesexy (Though the future-NPG appeared in the movie).

I would put Purple Rain with Dirty Mind, Controversy, and 1999 as far as an "era" goes. This was Prince launching himself into the forefront of the music scene and to world superstardom. Also, sound and stylewise, Purple Rain was the peak and culmination of the original "MPLS SOUND".
