I think Universal has really blown it with 3121 and her project. universal nothing. prince hasn't done a single tv performance (ellen, oprah, leno, letterman, the view, etc, etc, etc) and this fact has little to nothing to do with universal. universal pushed several major corporations to take part in massive 3121 promotion (the purple ticket thing, best buy and tower record's $3121 shopping spree contest), and they got black sweat played regularly on vh1 (they're still airing it as i saw it this morning). universal can't do all the work, though. prince needs to step up to bat and support this project himself.

I am sorry that is major failure. Yes, P could go on some T.V shows but most people get their exposure to music from the radio. We don't know what is going on behind the scenes but, I am sure we will find out soon enough.

Even 3121 is too good for radio. I wonder if they play him on Sirius or Xm?

When they feel like it, they will release the Music, and it will be great. I know its gonna sound good.
Tamar, You should be Proud of Yourself. I bet Prince is Proud of You. I don't know Ya, yet I'm Proud of Ya. with love, -nickki

I don't know about XM, but Sirius has been very good to Prince. They were one of the few outlets to put Te Amo in heavy rotation and did the same for Black Sweat. They've even put the Tamar song (BL&B) in heavy rotation as well. Sirius also has given regular play to non-single tracks like Lolita, Satisfied and Dear Mr. Man from the last album. This is about as close as it gets to the old days when a radio station would play several cuts from a new Prince album upon it's release. Whatever blacklist Prince is on with terrestrial radio PDs doesn't seem to apply with Sirius.

C'mon now, you can't dare say Universal didn't set Prince up right with this? This was the best promotion he'd ever had and he didn't show face. Did he think this was Around the World in a Day 2006 where he could just throw the record in shops and see what happens? Despite the release of two singles that went nowhere... Willa Wonka style promotion, print/television ads, debuting at # 1 (a feat Prince never accomplished in his Warner years) and you've got the audacity to blame Universal?!!?!?! Please...

I disagree somewhat. If and, this is a big "IF" Prince wasn't responsible for the album being leaked some 2 or 3 weeks before the release date they dropped the ball big time. There are plenty of casual fans who may actually enjoy the album but didn't buy the dang thing because they downloaded it on the internet for free. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We're in an age where NO album released on a major label makes it without being released at least 2 weeks before the date. Prince didn't do that. The only reason Musicology didn't "leak" is because of the giveaways and the fact that it had already been released by the music club. Now unless there is something Prince can't speak about, (which is very unlikely considering he's had no problems bashing Warner, EMI, and Arista when those deals went sour in his eyes) Universal handled (and is still handling) the promotion for this album very well for a "one-off deal"... I'm sorry, Universal did what they were supposed to do.

This is getting just plain stupid with all the amateur execs on here telling how to pomote.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Prince's albums have never been heavily promoted except probably Batman. Every release has been put out and left to sink or swim, in the last 12 years or so there has not been a strong release of singles and thats what keeps interest in albums.
In my opinion he's no more popular now than he was when he released Symbol. Johnny got a hat cuz he don't trust pills....

I'd say Musicology was heavily promoted.

No real airplay of any of the Musicology album tracks other than Musicology in the UK, there were no proper single releases that registered in the UK charts even though Musicology was relesed as a single, I never saw the Cinnamon Girl video on TV (but I may have not been watching at the time). Emancipation was his most promoted album IMO

What happened to all the planned tv appearances?
did universal pull the plug on those shows or mislead Prince in some way?

Yes, P could go on some T.V shows but most people get their exposure to music from the radio. yes they do. But getting on the radio isnt all down to the record company. Sure, they buy air time a lot. But to get the kind of airplay required means you have to be current. You have to be in the news, you have to be popular and there has to be anticipation for it. Prince doesnt have that anymore. So for him to get radio play he needs to be in the limelight. He needs to be doing his own promotion. He needs to have a single doing well, which can happen if he released a single his fans woukld buy (with an extra track or an extended mix etc)... then the radio stations would pay attention. His press appearances ahve been abysmal. He hasnt put himself into peoples thoughts. he isnt ramming it home that he is around and so people arent anticipating hearing him. The record companies cant solve that problem. they need Prince in the press and other media to compliment what they CAN do. Anyway, I dont particularly care. I did when 3121 first came out, I wanted to see him get some recognition again from the man on the street. But now I couldnt care less - its business as usual, thats how it always will be.

I'm sorry, Universal did what they were supposed to do. Sorry I don't buy that. A couple of tracks here and there, snippets of songs maybe but not the entire album all over the net like that. And for the most part (I think Laura made this point) they can't get any of the songs played on the radio. Here in DC, Donnie Simpson plays different tracks from the album, but that's because he actually likes those specific tracks. I have yet to hear any other radio station in this area (urban or pop) play anything off this album. Doesn't make me any difference either way so whatever. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You're wrong about albums appearing on the Net prior to their release date.
For example, just did a search for Stadium Arcadium, the new album by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, not out until the 9th May, and it's all over the Internet as an "illegal" download. This sort of thing happens all the time with new albums, particularly with popular artists.
