I haven't read that forword, but I tend to agree with Nep2nes. You are always entitled to your opinion, but that is not the right place to just diss. You can compare or make reference to, but not just jump on the opportunity to show your bitterness towards a specific artist, that has nothing to do with the main topic of the book.
And that, it it is being said by the pope or by the guy next door, it doesn't matter, it is still out of touch. nick

I have that book, but I wasn't a real Prince fan when I read that foreward so it didn't hit me as it does now.I just went
through it 2 make sure it was there and sure enough it is. Nikki Giovanni shouldn't be judging Prince 4 changing his behavior. In fact she's being a hypocrite becuz 2Pac changed his persona as well, when he joined Death Row records. That's when he was with Suge Knight and he let him influnece him, and that's what lead 2 his death. The poems were written way before that happened, before he had a record deal. I respect 2Pac and his music,he's one of the best MCs that ever lived. He wasn't a perfect person though, no one is no matter how talented they are.Nikki is just a big fan of 2Pac and U know how fans get with their artists. She made a bad judgement on her part, and it makes her look stupid. - I dont know nothing about her work, but I hope she is really a ´black POET´. Unfortunately, lately, every rapper is called a ´poet´, just because he/she disses the police and women with rhymes. Poetry is much more than that. She's a POET, not a rapper! LOL@ this thread.I can't believe so many of you have NO CLUE who Nikki Giovanni is! Some of y'all assume she is a rapper??!! Lawd!!

I don't know if Gustavo thought that she was a rapper or if he was saying that he hoped that she was not a rapper that people decided to call a poet because she rhymed. At any rate, rappers are called poets far too often. SUPERJOINT RITUAL - http://www.superjointritual.com

I have very good grammar aside from the occasional "y'all" which I mostly use because this is Prince's site and I consider it 2 b a word many Prince fans use. And aside from my shorthand ("2" instead of "to"), I think I'm an outstanding speller, with the exception of maybe one wrong letter within a word. But that's only happened maybe twice. I got a 1220 on my SAT...I'm not as dumb as u think. . [This message was edited Mon Jul 22 18:34:29 PDT 2002 by Nep2nes]

Actually this is kind of funny. That "SLAVE" phase was essentially Prince jumping up and down; holding his breath. Screaming at the top of his lungs: "I WANT MY MASTERS!!! I WANT MY MASTERS!!! I WANT MY MASTERS!!!I WANT MY MASTERS!!! GIVE ME MY MASTERS OR I WON'T PLAY!!! Dang bro; go hire yourself some kick ass lawyers. Don't get sweated!!
Tupac represents most hypcritical B.S. in hip hop. He is part prophet/street rebel/ player/pimp/thug/wannebe fantasy that's prevelant in hiphop. When you mention his negativity, you get the prophet aspect from fans.. Prince (the early, hungry Prince that most so-called Thugged-Out Prophets respect) is the one that was close to Tupac's game and heart. It's the one that most phony "90's "Wannebe Eclectic Music Connaiseurs"(sp) respect. I'm sure Prince does not care for this period at all. Some dirt went down here. One more note on The these "90's Wannebe Eclectic Music Connaiseurs related to Hip Hop": They always can point to an artist's earliest work and tell you some B.S. that you already know! Then they compare it to Today's watered-down Samplefest and Neo-Soul to make their garbage seem compatible, and ground-breaking! They act as if today's entertainers are "holding the torch for every establish artist's most creative periods" (holdin' it down). Tupac was not a complete music artist, just a lyricist. His legend was a product of good sampling of great songs: "So Many Tears" = Stevie Wonder's "That Girl" His best producers were Digital Underground/Shock G. When he left Digital Underground his music suffered when Dre. left. He often copied the styles of several rappers: Ice Cube, Scarface, and MC Breed. (not above Prince, eh?) He was weakest when he had to create rivalries to sell records for a gangsta he didn't need to be associated with, Suge Knight! He attended a well respected School of performing Arts with Jada Pinkett Smith. He spoke of black love ("Blacker the Berry"), but was going to marry The mulatto(mixed) daughter of Quincy Jones before his unfortunate passing. (hmmm... better than Prince) He attended Versace (and Tommy Hilfiger) shows with Kidada Jones. He was probably the first rapper planning his own watered-down line of expensive Coca-Cola clothes. Look ghetto youth! Look like me! Buy my gear! Make me and these designers rich of the backs of impoverished "sweat-shop workers". Tupac was like every other artist that these "Hood-philosophers" compare him to. They need to get a grip. No one is drinking their Kool-Aid. A house built on B.S. stinks and sinks. I respect the fact that he said some good things, but he died tryin to maintain his "thug" image. He liked Prince. He liked good music. It's a shame that he had to die the way he did. He may have grown out of his need for attention. He did not allow himself to do so. Some Charades must be dropped in order to live right. God bless his mother and children. His family will have to share the royalties of his most successful works, because he needed Suges's $$ to get out of jail. Tupac was a great video star.
