I just watched "Graffiti Bridge" and realized that Morris Day's wardrobe and hairstyle are a lot like what Prince sports for his "Diamonds and Pearls" era.

Which gets me thinking: Maybe "Diamonds and Pearls" was his materialistic, superficial side coming out. Even the title is money-minded and he made some of his most lavish videos for that record.

In "Graffiti Bridge" he paints himself as such a little prude, Mr. Spiritual, while Morris is the practical, worldly guy always thinking about money and chasing pussy.

Then Prince puts up his hair in a gigantic pompadour, just like Morris, and starts wearing pimp suits like the Time. And that "Gett Off" video is like Caligula on acid. Not much spirituality on "Diamonds and Pearls."

Food for thought...

Yeah, the style in the late 80ies - early 90ies were quite disbelief ...
Just watch Tony M, Game boyz, MC Hammer, Johnny Depps 1st TV-serie (germish..) (what was their name?), Beverly Hills 90125 even the early Massive Attack videos and not 2 4get every single wedding video in those days..ugly haidoo, spencerjackets, baggy plundertrousers (germish?) glittershirts for men razored necks but lots of hair on the top....all so brrrrruargh!
I do have a.. ahem..boot of Prince at the Arsenio shows...interesting but like you said silly (but this was the usual style of the early 90ies)..so much overstyled. I don't like this style..it's kinda uppernosed..(right term?)..hmpf

nod You know artpal on this site? She was apart of Robin Power and the Uptown Dames. She said Prince created the Morris Day character after the more matierilistic, playboy side of himself.

I remember the D&P era very well. I really feel in love with Prince at this time. It's amazing all the sucess he had with his album. I remember him being HUGE at this time. But the songs are no where near his best. But the style was there. It was definatly the style over substance period and he did very well with his tour, videos, and album during this time. hmmm

I just felt reminded of the style of this era, how Prince (kinda) and a lot of people use to wear clothes it makes me shiver sometimes.
And I mean old pictures of that time, musicclips and homemade videos and every wedding video in this time (I saw) has this style. I don't have this problem with the early 80ies.

I really liked his aura around this time...I loved the sexy women, the fourties glitz feel, the party Prince...hmmmm...

...and he looked more masculine than usual..the definatly had that pimp daddy look going on...but yet there was something so sensual and gentle about him that it wasn't threating!

Like during the D&P video when he was kissing down that woman's leg...and the Insatiable video..... excited...omg I wish more men were like him...more sensual and really adored women....

I was totally into the Pimp Rag, Lollipop and Cane look! Only Prince could pull that off and not turn a bunch of people off. Plus, his band was slammin' then. Rosie Gaines was awesome and even though he gets a bad rap - no pun intended- I like Tony M too. I don't think I ever saw the video Insatiable. His love songs were sexy and sensual at the same time. mushy

Forgive me if I was a bit harsh.

I may have overreacted.

I understand 80s fashions make you cringe. When I see pictures of myself from the 80s I shiver from embarrassment.

It's very sobering.

That makes sense. Prince has always had trouble admitting he liked money so it's only logical he invented a separate character to embody his more business-minded side.

I defy anyone to find lyrics or quotes where Prince speaks highly of money. Well, in "Moviestar" he says "I like that money!" but it was tongue in cheek. He's usually all high and mighty about it: "Some days I make a lot of money and give it all away," "Money don't matter 2night..."

Which is a damn shame cuz the Morris Day character is freaking hilarious. "You know I miss them backrubs.... Mmmm.... Ahhhhh...." And the whole "What's the password" scene in "Purple Rain." Sometimes I wish Prince would act more like him.

Oh, and that scene on the Bridge had me in stitches.

"Jerome, where did I get my manners?"

"Same place she got that ass."

"And where's that?"

"Momma."

"That's right, baby. Your momma."

That's gold, baby.
