Parliament and Prince listening to Parliament's greatest hits cd this morning, I was struck by some of the elements in Parliaments songs that also appear in Princes. Alot of the songs on the cd are before 1977 and there is a camille like voice on one song, a 'bobgeorge' like voice on another..I know Prince worked with George Clinton but I didn't realize just how much of an influence George Clinton and Parliament were.

Oh yeah, George has always been cited as a big influence on Prince.

yep, HUGE influence
in MANY different ways and don't forget who was there to induct P-Funk into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame (1997) [Edited 4/8/06 2:50am]

Check out Parliament's alter ego Funkadelic while you're at it. Hugely influential on Prince, and just about all of funk-rock. Hell the red hot chili peppers copped their style from Funkadelic's Maggot Brain album

Prince wrote Erotic City after seeing a Parliament-Funkadelic concert at First Ave.

I always thought Scarlett Pussy was an ode to the Godfather of Funk! It is defiantly George Clinton-esq. (I love it!) [Edited 4/7/06 14:57pm]

most people on this baord don't. There are frequent threads that pop up and give credit to the camille voice to some Pricely weirdness...but in truith anyone who was around and listen to Parliment and George Clinton before Prince knew that Camille was nothing more than Princes answer to their characters. Such as "Sir Nose" Dance... Let me see you dance

Camille is just a voice. Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk was just too damn cool! Hey, can you imagine Prince doing Flashlight in concert?! I'd lose my mind.

I remember back in the day, my buddy was nuts about Prince. I played him a compilation of Parliament tracks and my buddy was distraught.
He always assumed that Prince was being totally innovative and leading the way musically. He never looked at Prince in the same way again (although he did get hooked on Parliament so it's not all bad).

prince copped very much form Pfunk and Sly Stone.
The whole The Time as another entity was taken fomr Clinton using 2 bands with different styles of music (funk or more rock elements juxtaposed with Parliament and Funkadelic) and Camille aint nobody but Sir Noses distant relative

"Razor Sharp" Keyboardist for George Clinton/ Bootsy's Rubber Band / P-Funk All-Stars, and My Mother, "Butterfly", have been Friends since I was 3 or 4 years old. I'm now 37 years old.
I've lived with and am Musically Trained By Sly Stone, since 1992. Currently, I feel like running away to join the circus musically. Yet at the time, I'm patiently awaiting. I'd like to be accepted for who I am, not what some may like to make me out to be. Playing keyboards and singing rock'n'roll, plus several other genres, plus original material, is what I do best. Also, I went to college, to make Films. Razor and I, in 2002, made "A Funkumentary:The HIStory of Funk". I don't think I know anyone from this site, yet maybe I do. Yet I'm here, just to feel a part of what maybe people who simply enjoy good music and films. It's not easy to say, if I'll fit in here, or if I'll even be liked here. Yet its worth a try. If You don't like Me, I'll go away. Thanks for the time being. I'm so excited about this "Speed Racer Movie". Ready to move forward with it, yet I would like to be sure, that I have A Main Character, who is really interested in Portraying the Role of "Speed". Today, I'm sort of sad, yet am going shopping, not for much, yet really, just to go out and try to cheer myself up. sort of sad today. guess i'm would like to be a part of something, without getting hit with a bunch of insults. I'm a productionelholic. in need of a production fix. *stillawaiting*, -nickki #051559

Thats the fun of Prince. Noticing all the influences from your life loves and his clever spin on em, plus his unique sound and style. Too much fun. Check out the Sir Nose pimp slide down the spiral staircase in the When Doves Cry video. That ish had us jumping up and down cuz we recognized. A lot of us have known all along, that, and a billion other things that hes done. The more you listen and broaden your perspective, the more fun it is.
