Ever had an "is that a Prince song??!" experience? Now people, have you ever had the same experience were you've heard a certain song, whitout ever really knowing who sings it, and then you after several years realize that that's actually Prince? Maybe 'cause you didn't listen so carefully to it or you weren't that into P at that time.
One of "my" songs is Uptown. The few times I've heard the song on the radio I liked it and thought it was some band from the 70's playing, but then I got The Hits/The B-Sides (don't have Dirty Mind) and was like "what???!!" That man is amazing. Which song has he NOT written? (Rhetorical question) [Edited 4/19/06 13:55pm]

Yeah, before I knew who Prince was, I heard U Got The Look on a trailer for Magnum P.I. and bought Roxette's Look Sharp album, because there was a song called The Look, which I figured must be the same one. Sheena Easton in UGTL sounds like her out of Roxette (at least, to a 13 year-old). At the time, it made sense.
Is that Eva Longoria in your avvie, btw?

My college roommate played a Tupac rap song... I heard the bass and immediately thought: this has something to do with Prince! So I looked at the CD insert... and I was right! Tupac had sampled 777-9311 by Prince (that's what it read i think... i don't think it mentioned the Time). I had never heard 777-9311 at the time! I felt so proud of recognizing it as Prince!
Edit: Oops! I re-read your post Venus... and this isn't really an example of what you were talking about. Sorry! I'm a [Edited 4/19/06 14:25pm]

Back in 1985, I was listening to the radio when a tune called "Oh, Sheila" came on the radio. It didn't sound exactly like prince's voice, but it was very close and so was the music. Throw in the "Sheila" reference (as in E., of course) and it just seemed like Prince.
I knew it wasn't on any of his albums so I thought maybe it was a b-side or something. The next day, I hear it again and the dj says it was the group Ready For The World. It didn't make me like the song any less- it was catchy enough to be sure- but it did make the thing seem like a total rip-off. Unsuprisingly, 'Ready' was not to be heard from again, though they could have probably made a decent living as a Prince cover band.

I guess we kinda did hear from them again, just not in the same package. This is a bastardization of the original post's question, but I remember hearing a song called "Ghetto Heaven" on the radio and really thinking it was either Prince or a new protoge project. Even when I found out the name of the band was The Family Stand, I still thought Prince had a hand in it until I bought the album and realized there was no connection. I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

I few years back I heard a song called "Regular Thing". I went nuts searching for news about the new Prince song.....wasn't him. It was done by Ovis. Almost as Princeish as "Do Anything".

I found out in 2004 when I was going through his catalogue that he sang "Diamonds & Pearls" and "Cream."
I used to love those songs at the age of 3, back then. Ooh, little darlin' if you're

Interesting stories. Though actually I meant the other way around.
Your hear this song from time to time, maybe you like it, it never crosses your mind that it could be Prince, and then later you realize that it is PRINCE!

I got very confused one day not too long ago when Sheila E came on the radio with the Belle of St Mark! I was like "I know I know this song, what is it?!" It was only when she got to the chorus I realised I had only had that album for about a month by then! The fact that it was on the radio at all was confusing!
Also, years ago, I was playing the main riff to I Wanna Be Your Lover on the bass and my mother came in and asked if I was playing Santana!
