Is Prince Considered a Nostalgic Act?

... if so, why and will he ever be able to overcome that label?

When he's in heavy rotation.

not likely, but I'm content as can be that he's putting out music that at least doesn't suck.

I think that as long as there's one fan in the audience crying

"PURPLE RAAAAAIN!!!" headbang :litcigarettelighter:

He will always be considered, to some degee, a nostalgic act.

But that's a "general public's" perception. Those of us who see beyond "Purple Rain" see more to him than his hits of the past.

Prince became somewhat of a nostalgia act as soon as 1985 hit. What I mean by that is that audiences always want what made the artist famous. Prince was forever to have a certain portion of concerts coming for Purple Rain. It happens to everyone. People will forever go see MJ to see him dance to "Billie Jean", they will flock to Pink Floyd in hopes of hear material from "Dark Side of the Moon", and so on.A few years back my parents went to see Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. Do you think they weren't hoping for some Led Zeppelin? Of course they were.

When an artist has been as successful as long as Prince has, it is somewhat unavoidable. The artist can always say, "Screw that, I am only doing new stuff and no hits!" Some do. Prince has to an extent.

That being said, dude did just hit #1 with 3121. So it's not like he is the Village People or anything.
