Morris at the end of Purple Rain

I was just watching the movie again and I wondered about this the first time I saw it: At the end, when Morris and his band are finished with their gig and they go past Prince & co's dressing room, mocking them, why does Morris stop when the others go away and look so miserable, all of a sudden?? Is he feeling guilt or fear or what? confuse

Guilt and remorse. He just mocked his dad getting shot.

Yeah. Great scene, great buildup. The Time walk by the Revolution, singing "Let's go crazeeeee... Let's get nuuuuuttttsss..." then Morris backpedals for the killer line: "Howz the family?"

In the 20th annivesary edition the director expains how they felt they HAD to include Morris look remorseful after making that comment, to soften the blow.

It was a pretty heartless thing to say.

Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

Wow, wasn't it obvious??? He said something he wished he didn't say but was caught up being cool with the guys. Then realized that he is going to have to see the kid again and again and that was a really shitty thing to say and how would he feel if his family was in the hospital.
Prabably thought he was gonna get his ass kicked before he went on stage again by the kid. razz

I always thought Morris was referring to the Revolution when asking "How's family?"...
Even if the look is because he feels bad about what he just said, I think they could have done that some other way. It just looks weird. Maybe it's just the bad acting...

Yeah, when I first saw "Purple Rain" I didn't get that line either. And Morris's look was just strange to me.

Years later a girlfriend would explain to me exactly what happened in that exchange. So young and naive was I...

I always thought he meant the revolution with the family and the realised how bad things were in the kid's family.
