Prince's hasn't done a thing since "Mountains"

I don't want to bring anyone's head down, I don't want to spoil the party here, but Prince has not written a great song since "Mountains" -- that's a twenty year dry spell!

I just listened to "Mountains" today and it is monumental. It is mighty. Majestic. MAGNIFICENT! What song since "Mountains" can you say that about? Sure Prince has written many, many great song over the past twenty years, but nothing has come close to the masterpiece that is "Mountains."

"Mountains" - Prince's last masterwork. I love that song.

Yeah, "1+1+1=3" is great, "Face Down" is fantastic, "Sign O The Times" is out of this world, and "I Wish U Heaven" is wonderful, but Prince has never been able to come close to "Mountains" in twenty years. (In all honesty, no musical artist has been able to come close to "Mountains".) I've finally given up hope that Prince will top "Mountains." I've waited twenty years, I guess it's time to finally admit Prince will never write a song better than "Mountains." A part of me is sad over that.

It's only mountains and the sea....

Come on, sing along to Prince's best.

biggrin biggrin biggrin

I know they had a hand in it, maybe that explains why "Mountains" is Prince's Sgt Pepper. Miles above any other Prince song.

shrug Okay. I disagree.

I'll take a bunch of Prince songs since then over Mountains.

Sign 'O' The Times, Adore, The Question of U, Joy in Repetition, The Love We Make, etc. etc.

Mountains is a fine song, but it is somewhere in the upper middle of Prince's catalogue from my point of view.

I think it's one his most overated songs among the fan base.

But hey, that's what's incredible about music; it affects people in such different ways.

It a fantastic song indeed but Prince had done plenty of great songs since Mountains. As said before, Sign O The Times (practically the whole album), Anna Stesia, and plenty more after that. It doesn't take away from Mountains being a kickass song.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I agree with all of you that Prince has come up with incredible music since "Mountains."

However, all I am saying is that "Mountains" is Prince's HAMLET. Sure Shakespeare has other great works, but HAMLET stands above the others. "Mountains" is that one above all others for Prince.

Great intro, wicked rhythm, great verses, fantastic bridge, awesome chorus, superb vocal throughout -- it is Prince at his very best all in one song.

That driving rhythm that we get in "Mountains" has never been topped by Prince. You can not stand still when you hear this song. And I dare you to not sing along. Impossible.

for me, mountains is the style of prince that i love and miss...its the lyric coupled with the genre melding coupled with the energy.

he still has it in him to do all of the above and the song not sound like a wendy & lisa style song (see a lot of SOTT & Lovesexy) so im not asking for a Revolution era sounding song...

im guess im just desring strong lyrics along with the music.and a since of energy...3121 is great but the lyrics arent the best....its almost there....i'd also say 3121 is missing one really killer energy track..if it had that and great lyrics i'd say its a classic.

This is absolutely cracked. The majority of Parade was better than bland mountains. Most of what he has released since has been superior. I know Mountains was a video, but it has never been on a hits accumulation. It is understandable why Anna Stesia has a huge P following, but Mountains? I will gladly take the Riviera-nuanced Do U Lie or the funky New Position (as well as other tracks from Parade) over Mountains. That said , I guess appreciation of music is subjective

the energy.

Right on.

Energy.
That's exactly what "Mountains" possesses.
I call it a driving rhythm, a driving force, but energy is what makes "Mountains" the great piece that it is.

I feel you on this. "Mountains" is great. It sounds like ocean waves and it captures that feeling you get when you look at mountains: AWE.

And that sweeping chorus. Beautiful and naive and pitch perfect.

His little outfit was cool, too. He looked like a gypsy mariachi dude.

mountains is one of my all time favorites...
there is no way that wendy and lisa wrote that first verse, it is totally prince.

my only gripe is that it is sung in falsetto..

he should do an acoustic mountains in his lower register on the next tour.

Tired of all this comparison of his music.

Its all different. Mostly good ,very little bad.

Theres eras that stand out (80-88, 93-96, 01-03) but there ALOT of good stuff outside those years.

I don't know what people like about the chorus so much. I don't find it to be a particularly strong melody.

Wendy and Lisa wrote the music, with input from Prince once the
basic song had already been written, and Prince wrote the lyrics.

I disagreed about that one. I think Prince made wonderful songs since Mountains like Housequake, Batdance, Glam Slam, and many more.

I like Mountains 12 version better though.
