Underrated album openers

I am not talking classics like I Wanna Be Your Love, Let's Go Crazy, 1999, or Sign O the Times.

I would say The Rainbow Children (my favorite track on a great record, it swings along in such a cool, breezy, jazzy manner, yes the voice does detract), but I love it.

Also Around the World In a Day, That worldly sound just fits the subject matter so well. Way differenet from what he had done before.

For You. Who would expect just vocals on the first song of a young man's debut record.

Sorry :
Jam of the Year: what a dud to start Emancipation

Diry Mind, don't like you that much.

Controversy and Come, Come is just not that interest, Controversy is nice, funky and thought provoking, but both were very long

Rave: not so funky

Honorable Mentions, 3121,funky, not sure if it fits into the Classics, there is one missing here I thought of , what it is?

I'd have to second that.

The orchestral arrangements are some of my favorite from that piece.
Ooh, little darlin' if you're
free 4 a couple of hours (Free 4 a couple of hours)
If U ain't busy 4 the next 7 years (Next 7 years)
Say, let's pretend we're married and go all night

i don't think their has ever been a song with lyrics as thought provoking, yet with a beat that is just plain "wax her ass" worthy.

a lot of people seem to strongly dislike "Eye No" from Lovesexy
whilst I think it's a very uplifting and good song. it is just
the right track to set the vibe for the album.

and it always makes me smile and feel good, joyfull.

"Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic" - Hot funk ala late 80's. Thought this should definitely have been included on either Batman or Graffiti Bridge.

"I Know" - This song is HOT. When I first got into Prince, around 1992, I heard this song and about fell the fuck out. That bass, the keyboards, the cool party vibe, the horns. I even dig the trippy, soul trip intro.

"For You" - One of his most beautiful vocal performances ever.

For You - Vocal accomplishments yes, commercial way to get known - no!!! Lot of newbies would say, what the hell is this
I wanna be your lover- Now thats better, hit song, starts a hit album, and the next two numbers don't slow it down
Dirty Mind - Brilliant, his manifesto for the whole album summed up.
Controversy, see above, but a funkier and more mature vision of the contents.
1999- Princes first really inspired song, on his first really inspired album
Lets go crazy - Brilliant rocker and Prince pathos, way to make people listen to a HIT album
ATWIAD- As an opener cost him 10,000,000 new fans, NO NO NO!
Christopher Tracys Parade - Bouncy enough, but a bit weird, not the best starter, maybe Mountains would have been a better choice.
Sign o the Times, absolutely briilliant and thought provoking number which welcomes you to his musical high water mark
Le Grind, Does it job and is irresistably funky
Eye Know, Surprisingly good poppy song on a very weak album.

So theres my opinion for his first albums, other good starters are Cant Sto this feeling, Thunder, My name is Prince, P-Control and Jam of the Year besides the two best Musicology and 3121. The others are not so good sorry.
17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

Imago

Christopher Tracey's Parade.

Not becuase it's a great song, but becuase it signals the rest of the album. 20 seconds into this song, you're going to know whether you love the rest of the album or not.

Try putting on some headphones and listening to the album that way. You might get a better feel for the album. There's a ton of stuff you'll hear better. Give it a chance. Back in 88 when it came out I kinda shook my my head and went WTF? It's now in my top 5. "I wish U heaven" nuff said!

OK, I will do that.
I have tried to listen to it many times, and it has never worked for me.
I think Alphabet St., Glam Slam, Anna Stesia and I Wish U Heaven are OK tracks.
The Lovesxy album has for me always been one of the worst by Prince, BUT, the Prince- year of '88 and the Lovesexy TOUR seems exciting, though I don't know much about it.
I am soon hoping to get my hands on the Live DVD from the Lovesexy tour.
