Alternate version of Come

I dunno what the version name of the song is as the mp3 is simply titled “Come”. I think its off one of the Work Volumes.

It begins with a live sound to it, a classic Prince build up with guitar, drum roll and then a count “1, 2, 1 2 3 4!”. Bang! It all drops down to a bass and kick drum with Prince claiming “This is the beginning of a new…” (cant remember exactly what he says).

He then proceeds to speak the lyrics to Come. It is all very chilled out and laid back before building up…

Such an excellent version of Come! It sounds live to me but with additional stuff added to it in the studio.

Does anyone know what I am talking about? What is this version? I cant get the keyboard “strings” out my head when the chorus kicks in, mellow laid-back funk!

What other versions are out there? Ive heard a dance version similar to the Beautiful Experience version.

There are a few versions of Come because the album went through a few configurations and Warners wanted changes - during the wrangling, Prince re-worked some of the tracks. The one you are talking about is a studio boot, from the '93 configuration of Come... I think... at the end it should sound like it is going to segue into 'Shhh' which was originally going to be on Come.

The only other version I've heard is the 'dawning of a new spiritual age' version you mention, more clubby, I think it is the same version as on the Beautiful Experience film.

There is one that is a pretty good work up, with some extra lyrics. Then there is a rework that was itself reworked to mix into the Glam Slam Ulysses/The Beautiful Experience

I loved the REAL stripped down version that was played in a concert that I have somewhere.

It does sound like its gonna segue into something else at the end as it abruptly ends after a build up... Now I think about it it probably is Shh. It certainly sounds like its headed in that direction.

Its a cool number!

Yeah the unreleased versions of Come are great. The version from The Beautiful Experience is one of my fav's from the period, it's a shame it wasn't released.

Yup, that was the original version of 'Come' from the first configurations of
the album. At that point the opening 3 tracks all segued directly into each other
- Come - Endorphinmachine - Space.

This version of 'Come' was pretty much recorded live in the studio, with extra
instrumentation added afterwards. It was later remixed and aired on the 'The
Beautiful Experience' TV special. Then later still, the whole track was totally
re-recorded from scratch (which is the version on the released album).

Well, I think the first incarnation is the mutts nuts! Far superior to the album version, if somewhat too short.
