Van Halen's Jump aka Dirty Mind

An okp hipped me to the fact that Van Halen's "Jump" keyboard melody is the same synth melody from Prinfes Dirty Mind.

I never noticed that back then. I hear it now though.

Probably an Official Keyboard Player. Like, they've received their certification.

No, you're dead right actually! It's just the chords, rhythm and top line synth melody that's different.

I can only presume that you're stoned

Similar, definitely.
Chord stabs over that pulsating beat.

But they have a totally different feeling and Jump has a completely different chord resolution.

he poster has a great point. I don't know why the first couple of replies jumped on the guy. I hate that mob mentality folks get before someone with sense answers and sways the mmob to a different direction. But yeah it's very similar to Dirty Mind. Wouldn't surprise me if it was a blatent rip. Is Davoid Lee Roth still on the radio. I haven't bothered to tune in lately. If he is someone with time on their hands should call or e-mail and ask him.

Since when are we not allowed to express our opinions? Your reply is completely illogical. You get mad at the first few people for disagreeing, then it's alright when the mob mentality works in your favor.

Just for a quick retort. What got me "mad" as you put it was my perceived notion that the first couple of replies weren't geniune opinions but just responses thought to reflect the majority based on an assumption since the subject matter was something that probably didn't cross their minds. Just a part of a whole big philosophical view I have on life. I wasn't saying you shouldn't opinion though.

Back to the point, On his show Roth did say something about taking an AC/DC song and playing it backwards to make a Van Halen song. He used it as a representative of many songs they used similar tactics as well. So it's not hard to believe. Hey it may even be the those few Dirty Mind notes backwards, I haven't thought about it enough though so that's definitely not gospel.

The only similarity is that both songs are played using an Oberheim patch and they're in the same key.

Now get a fucking life, losers. wink
