I say that any mischievious/sexual song with the slightest speeded up vocal is the "Camille" flavor, whether Prince intends it or not... his intention is not important/valid once the songs are put out and listener perception forms a shape or pattern.

Erotic City doesn't fit the bill, there is no slightly speeded upvocal, is there? There is a cartoonishly speeded up vocal.

"Love or Money" DOES fit the bill, as does "Come On".

3121 does NOT, his normal voice is just doubled with a wah/too high pitched voice.

I guess so. Although, I feel 'Come On' sits uncomfortably with the rest since it's so far off, chronologically.

If we're extending the boundaries of Camille outside 'officialdom' here, then I'll put Hot Thing in there too, I always thought that was pretty much a Camille track, even from the same period. Also 'Wonderful Ass' slots in pretty well too IMO.

On this subject, and given that Camille is not defined by a sped-up vocal, I've always considered both The Black Album and Lovesexy to be Camille - given that the story in the Lovesexy tourbook attributes both records to him. cool

No, but Camille isn't defined by the sped-up vocal, Scarlet Pussy, and that Crystal Ball was going to be attributed to Camille at one point are examples that Camille isn't defined by the sped-up vocal alone. smile

I just think their sound fits the attitude/style and instrumentation.

I was thinking that Erotic city had a grossly speeded up vocal, to the point of chipmunk effect (not the camille effect), but isn't the main vocal straight?

Camille simply can't be categorised as the "speeded up voice".

Look at Bob George live, its Camille, but with a deep voice. Scarlet Pussy, the same thing.

Good Love was Camille in concept, but outside of the concept album, it was released as Prince. Same goes for Feel U Up.

Then of course there is Rebirth of the flesh. A Camille track, on the Camille album, without the usual speeded up voice! That pretty much sums up that Prince does not view the voice as the character.

I think, as fans, some of us would love to stick all the high speed voice tracks on a nice single CD and call it the complete works of Camille, but it clearly wouldn't match Princes description of the work.

"Crystal Ball" does have the slightly speeded up Camile style vocal. (Just like "U Got The Look").... so does Scarlet Pussy (not the main one, but it's in there)

are you sure "Rebirth" does not have the slighly speeded up vocal? compare to the rehearsal....

"Rebirth" does not have the speeded up vocal, and was the opening track for the Camille Album. That says it all really.

I Know My Prince Sh!t Too

November 1986
The "Camile" Album Turned Into Warner Bros,
To Be Released Under The Alias ...." Camile"
Some Sort Of Alter-Ego
The Album Was Not Going Be Released Or Credited As.....Prince
It Was Given A Catalog Number. And Test Prints Were Made.

Prince Later Desided To Scrap The Album.
And Add Some Tracks To His Next Project.....
The 3 Disc Album "Crystal Ball"
2 to 3 Different Configureation of the Album Were Made

But WB Wouldnt go For It
Thinking An 3 Disc Album Was Not A Good Idea
And Sales Would Be Bad.

So He Cut It Down To 2 Records
Wich Turned Out To Be The " Sign Of The Times " Album.

All The Camile Track Were Released On Different Album, B-Side, Etc.....
Except " Rebirth Of The Flesh"
***Yes It Does Have Speeded Up Vocals..From What I Remember

So Is " Love Or $ " A Camile Track.....No

But Who Really knows What Prince Was Thinkng At The Time
Or What Tracks Didnt Make It On The Camile Album.
Im Sure There Had To Be Outakes...That We Never Heard of Yet

My Opinion Is.....
Songs Like.....
Love Or $, Crystal Ball, Bob George, Erotic City, Sex, Dream Factory
Party Man, Ect....ohh Even..... Baby Knows [to many to list]
All Fit In The Catagory, Tradition And Style Of The Camile Album
Scarlt Pussy Even Shows Us That Camile
Can Be Speeded Up, Slowed Down And Even Normal Vocals.
I Call Them All " Camile Style Or Songs "

The Character :Inspiard By
Herculine Barbin an 19th Centry Hermaphrodite.
Nicknamed Camile. A Male Who Was Raised As Girl.

Around The "Camile" Album
He Started Writing a Script Based On The Character Camile
The Idea Was He Play Himself & Camile
But Realy There The Same Person [Split Personality]

Like ...NouveauDance..Explans
Camile Resurfaced
On The Black Album..

And The Lovesexy [tour book], And The Show
Camile Hads 2 Sides Good / Bad
It Makes Sence That Bob George Was part Of The Show, Story
Split Personality...Fits Right In

.I Theres more i left out..but enough said.....

Kinda. He decided to develop the Camille album/theme, not scrap it, early on, Crystal Ball was attributed to Camille, but it was later dropped. (I think this was already brought up earlier in the thread). smile

Not necessarily. That's speculation based on the evasive/non-committal answer Prince gave in a 1997 interview. (Hopefully someone will pull up the specific quote from one of the plethora of older Camille threads). It *may* have been inspired by Herculine Barbin, but Prince's answer doesn't explicitly state it was.

It has a few vocal effect added here and there, like many Prince tracks, but it does not have the usual speeded up voice that people are attributing to Camille.

huh? The entire vocal track is slightly speeded up just like U Got The Look, or If I Was Your Girlfriend! The entire length of the song. I'm listening to it right now.

All that is true but the Camille voice was a mistake by a tape that Susan Rogers had run at the wrong speed, he liked it and kept it. The mistake was made on If I Was Your Girlfriend.

Are you sure about that? I'm pretty sure Pfunk and some other 70's funk artists have used the sped up voice trick before Prince?

Now Kanye's bringing it back.. "Through the Wire" was actually sung by camille.

BEAUGARDE

Camille is the voice that starts the 1999 album and appears again in Automatic. And the Erotic City & Love or Money. Camille is P's alter ego/his Gemineye.

Its a hard one. I have three versions, which are in essence the same track, but at various speeds. The fastest sounds like "camille", but the song does sound slightly too fast.

The second and third versions are slightly slowed down, hence the vocal are more normal (tinge of speeded up) but the song sounds like it is at regular speed.

I think the problem with this track is, being a bootleg, we do not know the exact speed of the original is supposed to be.

On a different note...we forgot about the "guest" appearances of "Camille" on All My Dreams and Lovesexy!?

I have the MP3 that "T" leaked that is the correct speed, perfect quality, and it is the same style as the song U Got The Look, the subtle slightly speeded up.
