So i as watchin Purple Rain last nite and its been a while since i seen it and i just wanted to no....y the hell did Apollonia cry when Prince sang Darling Nikki the song really had no relation with her or anything he never even been to her house sooo why does she run off lol.....AND ANOTHER THING why did Morris Day look all sad and shit after his last performance in the movie I dont get it he aint have nuttin to b upset about....i was juss confused bout that can ne1 clear it up 4 me?

She and Prince weren't exactly on the best of terms at the time. Next thing you know, he's singing a song about a slut and looking her way. Hmmm, I wonder what inspired this performance?

As a side note Vanity was supposed to play the part that Crappolonia played. Vanity's name in the movie was to be Nicolette. When Vanity got booted from the movie he didn't bother to change the name of the song, probably becuase it just didn't have the same ring as Darling Nikki.

Question 2: Morris had just made a very crude remark to get a laugh in front of The Time regarding The Kid just as The Revolution was supposed to go on stage, i.e., the "How's the family?" remark which was messed up because The Kid's father had just tried to commit suicide.

It's that part where Prince comes home to find his mother crying in front of the house. It's like afternoon right? Maybe early evening...
So how come when he makes it inside to confront dear old dad, it's DARK outside!?

How long was that walk to the basement door!? Where did he go? Did he walk around the block a few times to build up the courage? Go for a burger? what?

Someone shed some light on the darkness.

The thing in this movie that struck me was the rage Prince displayed in the seane where he destroys the basement and finds his father's songs. Prince is no phenomonal actor...but that anger and violence was pretty scary and quite convincing. It made me think something bad happened to him early on...and the anger in some of his songs like Lady Cab driver...I wonder where that anger comes from.

i took it more as an aggression, something like rita hayworth's strip performance "put the blame on mame" in "gilda." being slutty on stage in order to tick someone off, by reminding them of how much others of the opposite sex like you, and how many conquests you can have besides the person in question.

The Apollonia character was originally planned as "Nikki", played by Vanity.


When Vanity left the Prince camp shortly before shooting began Prince re-named the "Nikki" character to "Apollonia", who , by the way, happens to live in a hotel, so the lyrics still make sense and give it a "not-so-obvious" vibe....but it would´ve made more sense, in a way, if he had stuck with the "Nikki" name for the female leading role.
