why does the guitar strike before the yeah yeah's (prince's serpentine sleazy vocal) sound like its forwards, normal, NOT reversed? Doesn't have that vacuum suction to a point of sound that backwards hits have. Or is it an edited together thing?

Cuz the vocals aren't backwards. He just edited the vocals to come in AFTER the guitar. Funny that u should mention the "yeah, yeah" part cuz that's something that sounds weird. That's an "un-natural" thing to say, considering the lyrics of the song and it's in an odd place to say it in the song. I think the backwards guitar, the "yeah yeah yeah" are all for an effect. He wanted to make an impact on u right away. But the overall intro has a somewhat unsettling vibe. It's "foriegn". It's like u SHOULD know what it is but u don't. It SOUNDS like music, but...in a way, it sounds like something else. The first thing u hear in a song is crucial. It usually dictates if you're going to like the song or not. Not all of the time, of course.

NO! The guitar strike. I'm talking about the electric guitar. I said right before those vocals join in.

Damn, player. U ain't got to scream and shit! Homeboy is all like "No! No! No!" Of course I'm talking about the electric guitar. Prince didn't play the intro on an acoustic guitar.

Snap

i really have no words to express how i've ALWAYS felt about this intro... it's always sounded like something totally out-of-this world and it really sets the mood for the entire song. mind-blowing stuff, truly. i never get tired of it. a definite attention-grabber, even for the least-likely prince enthusiast, for who can deny the true musicianship of the one who put this "thing" together?

A perfect song.

From the beginning of the gutiar solo,

to ending of the fabulous keyboard display,

this is a masterpiece...

Agree with nothing else like this was being played on the radio.

Nothing came close to this tune..

And it still stands the test of time..

Funk at its best!!...(Yes damit!!! I said funk..it can do airthang..lol )

A groove with no bass that hit #1!!

I mean the drums were being

bass and beat at the same time....dayummm!!!

That blew me away!!

I thought Ladycab Driver was sheer genius, but this one, just a classic..

biggrin

great post, pill.

Thank U sir.. biggrin

Great thread!! thumbs up!

You always bring it Black... cool

Can anyone tell me how you're so sure that the intro guitar is backwards? I wouldn't pretend to know as much as some you do about guitar playing, but still... I don't know. Doesn't recordings played backwards have his certain characteristics? I think I mean the same effect like ufoclub. Hmmm, I guess I'm confused.

I will leave the real explanation up to the Pro's - however I recall vaguely many, many years ago reading it in Guitar Magazine. But there is a Characteristic in backwards guitar that you can pick out, again I will leave that up to blackguitarist to explain as he has become the Holy Grail of teh Thread here !! wink

Aaaaah, did I hear someone call my name? U were handling it quite nicely there, purpledisc. You're on point about reading it in Guitar Magazine and yes, backward recording DEFINATELY has a very specific sound. What makes this intro so coldblooded is that P did a hell of a job "masking" that backward whoosh that usually goes along with backwards recording. A few days ago, I went to the studio with the song on cd and after loading it up on ProTools, I isolated everything except for the intro and ran it in reverse. It is soooo clean and tight, which is credited to how well P played his run. Each note is clear, not blurred, which can easily happen with a phrase like that on some notes. There are no "ghost" notes in there. That, plus the octave type pedal effect P's using
gives it that sound. If u listen closely, when P plays that type of "Purple Haze" intro, alternating between two notes, underneath
his "yeah..yeah..yeah..yeah" u can hear the "sound" of the guitar change to a more "natural" / "normal" sound.

It is backwards but that just goes to show how visionary P is with knowing what scale to choose and more than that, what it's finally going to SOUND like when it's played foward.

Without sounding a smart arse though, Backwards Guitar was done many years earlier - Hendrix did this on Electric Ladyland (I think it was the track And The Gods Made Love where Hendrix kicked his strat around the floor and then played it backwards later) and also on his track Are You Experienced, which is very, very cool ..... So although it was cool in When Doves Cry, I don't see it as anything excitingly new at that time.....Still a kick ass intro though !!! wink

Let's not forget the backwards guitar of KC and the sunshine band "Get Down Tonight!"

Again I was only referencing to my Knowledge - I am sure there are 100's of Guiatrists who used Backwards Guitar Sounds on their tracks - i am not aware of all of them - However I would never have thought KC and the Sunshine band would have done this !!!! You learn something every day..... smile

I reversed it and it sounds MORE in reverse, meaning I don't think it sounds like the guitar soloing was reversed for effect... are you all sure?

I remember learning to play this through Guitar Magazine and it sounded cool (playing it forwards) I am pretty sure that it would be for effect, for whatever reason I do not know.

Remember Prince used cowbells in ATWIAD and that worked too !!!!

Not Cowbells.....Finger Cymbals.....Damn I need to sober up.....

P: (in deep ass Grasshopper voice) blackguitaristz, what it is? Oh, and I dig that name by the way.
bgz: Thanx, P.
P: U mind if I "borrow" that sometime?
bgz: Nah, P. Uh,...can I get credit?
P: Of course.
bgz: Cool.
P: Cool. So, what did u want to ask me?
bgz: Not me, but ufoclub here, he wanted to ask u a question.....
