Money don't Matter & If I Was Your Girlfriend Anyone notice that the lead vocal track is processed with the same wrong setting that made Susan Rogers cringe back when "Girlfriend" was recorded? Studio heads will recognize that I'm not referring to pitching the voice up in tone, but to the straining, distorted, limited, texture. Yeah, I know what you mean. Both tracks have an overdriven sound to the vocals.
Of course on 'If I Was Your Girlfriend' this was an error, but it was obviously done on purpose for 'Money Don't Matter 2 Night'. | |

Of course on 'If I Was Your Girlfriend' this was an error, but it was obviously done on purpose for 'Money Don't Matter 2 Night'. sometimes I think Prince loses the drama of such cool "alternative""punkass" techniques, because of the nature of the composition. "If I Was Your Girlfriend" matches in both it's unique song structure and its effects, but "Money don't Matter" is so conventional in it's composition and hook, that in memory, I don't even think of the vocal as having any kind of effect. There's also a slicing noise in the percussion to "money don't matter" that is kind of edgy, but wasted I think because the song doesn't lend itself to any edginess.
