Starfish and Coffee

Hi all in know this probably has already been discussed before but I have never seen anything on it myself. I was wondering what your take on what Starfish and Coffee is about? I seem to think it is about that no matter how the same people seem in there own way they are all different and that it is OK to be so. This is something I always have asked myself every time I hear the song and I never seem to get anyones take on it because most of my friends are not Prince fans.

Starfish and coffee is one of mine favorite songs but i admit i also don't know the meaning of starfish. i also don't know what a tangerine is ,i think some bread (maybe i am wrong). What to expect with a side order of ham ,beats me. I think it is some English or American food Which Cynthia Rose likes ,which i don't know about ,i never have to order in English. Never thought about it different (silly me?). Maybe Maple syrup is from Canada and the cookies ofcourse are in a cloud-shape.Jam in Holland is made of squashed srawberry's or so ,or is it from the word jammin'? This song i compare with 'strollin' somewhat. A 'in between' beauty. Nice & relaxed.

soujourner wow!

ok.

lol!

a tangerine is a citrus fruit.the outer peel is a darker/richer orange colour than a navel orange.the segments inside are sweet and have a distinctive taste.

a starfish is a sea creature shaped like a star. five protrusions/limbs stretch outwards from centre thus giving a starlike appearance. it uses these to advance forward or bakward for that matter on the sea floor.

butterscotch clouds are a type of sweet / candy / delicacy.

jam or as the americans refer to it (jelly) is a preserve made from fruit : strawberry , raspberry , lime/lemon (usually called marmalade and would contain actual citrus rind) and many other flavours. most often eaten as breakfast but jam can also be baked in pies and various other confections.

maple syrup is a common syrup in north america not widely available in europe however becoming more popular in places like england where it is seen on supermarket shelves more and more.

ham is a cured meat. it is pork (comes from a pig) it is eaten in the west.it's great when cut wafer thin and put on a sandwich.jewish people do NOT eat it. it can be smoked , baked , roasted. can be eaten hot or cold.generally cold.i recently found a bizarre recipe where the ham was baked in coca-cola.strange but true.

oh also green eggs and ham is the name of a trippy childrens book by dr.seuss.(i think it might be responsible for my adult dementia).

Ah thank you so much sweety and beleive me the feeling is mutual. (I still have that Kenny G album at the ready though lol !)

But fairlite you have a pretty good understanding of the song. Even though some people have different meanings attached to it. I've been listening to this song on a regular basis ever since SOTT came out and was given the nickname Starfish by some friends because it seemed to fit my personality. I veiw it as talking about a girl who is completly different from everyone around her and she is very happy with that. She doesn't care how others veiw her because she can always keep a smile on her face because she is happy with herself. That song made me feel better about being different from the majority of the kids in my school. I didn't care about what they wanted or how they felt but I was extremely happy with me and that is what should be important to everyone.
LOTS OF LUV 2 U ALL !!!

Thanks for the info.
One question;does one eat starfish ,maybe as something exclusive? Doesn't sound common.

The lyrics to "Starfish and Coffee" came from Susannah Melvoin's experience with a mentally challenged classmate during grade school. This was documented in Per Nilsen's excellent book "DMSR".
