The drums were also louder in the program, but it was recorded so that the sound was perfect. I know someone mentioned earlier that it was similar to the SOTT movie, but it is NOT the same as the SOTT movie version. I can tell you, catagorically, that the basic tune WAS recorded in the studio for the MTV show. Prince's vocals and his guitar were added during the show. This information comes from people in the band and there is a version of these songs that exist on tape that confirms this. Unless you have more concrete evidence to support your side, I think this matter may be over. Either way, it was a great show. band mates said what? versions of these songs on tape??? what are u talking about did Prince say on this alleged tape to the band right we're gonna record this and kick mtvs ass and mime to these tapes? When has Prince ever had the need 2 do a mimed performance like this, we've seen the evidence of his miming 1994 world music awards anyone?...how could that magnificent band convey that level of energy and conviction whilst miming in front of the worlds biggest stars and not come off feeling phoney...ive seen Prince bands miming b4 and it wasnt like that. DAYS OF WILD book, p.44:
11 September 1987 Prince a short but thrilling 10-minute set of "Sign O' The Times" and "Play In The Sunshine" at the MTV Music Video Awards, broadcast live from the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles. Few viewers realised that the band lip-synched to a pre-recorded live recording; only Prince's vocals and guitar were live. I don't think we can give any further evidence. | |

A band member WHO WAS ON STAGE FOR THAT PERFORMANCE has verified that it was just Prince's guitar and vocals on stage that night. Because of confidentiality agreements, their name isn't attached to the blurb in the book, but yes, I can confirm that it is not just an opinion, but a fact. I have also heard the tape of just the music that was used for the performance, so again, unless you have any proof on your side, I'd say this matter was pretty much closed.... but I'm sure we'll see another posting that just says you don't agree. That's fine, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but there are those who would prefer to rely on evidence and quotes from the individuals involved. Hope that clears it up. At least you acknowledge that your opinion can be wrong... Refreshing to see someone who clings to their opinion despite being confronted with stacks of evidence that shows otherwise. So, the bottom line is on the one side there are quotes from personal interviews of those who were involved, and an actual tape of the songs without Prince's guitar and vocals, and on the other side there is your opinion based on... your opinion. I think I'll let the other org'ers decide. Either way, it doesn't affect me much. That's fine, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but there are those who would prefer to rely on evidence and quotes from the individuals involved. Hope that clears it up. Here is a quote from Michael Bland about a performance they did on Soul Train. This shows that it happened occasionally and WHY it happened. This isn't about the MTV show, but it does explain it a little bit better. It gives historical precident about Prince playing guitar and singing over a pre-recorded tape, with his band miming. Despite the incredible talent in the band, there were reasons for doing it like this. NOW we can put this to rest. On (http://www.prince.org/msg/5/185602?&pg=6) Michael Bland expains- "everyone lip-synched on soul train, except for patti labelle, and one other artist... i can't recall.. if you'll notice, in every other instance, prince's vocals are live.. so, if you're referring to the fact that sometimes, the music was pre-recorded, that was mostly a precautionary thing. almost every time we tried to perform totally live on tv, the mix would suck, and the union guy on the job obviously could care less about turning up the electronic loop, or keeping the keyboards present in the mix.. so, it was easier for us to record it at paisley, and hand the union guy a stereo dat mix, and have prince's guitar rig live, and his vocal live.. so, i'm not sure if that qualifies as lip-synching or not..
