Lead guitar maybe. I think he really went one step further with the 93-95 NPG as far as those fantastic rhythm guitar breaks are concerned.

And just listen to the speeded-up performance of Pass the Peas from Fillmore 2004.

Yea ok Lead guitar defo, maybe rhythm as well, but rhythm wise thats a whole other debate. I personally think his lead playing was still scorching around the period u are talking about 93-96 cuz what I saw him do at wembley stadium when he premiered Peach and Endorphin Machine in 93 etc was wild and exciting and all out rock!

A wonderful guitar solo IMO he takes this really simple motif and plays it out and out wringing emotion from every note. I LOVE it worship

also The MTV performance of Play In The Sunshine is one of his greatest moments.

Performing a musically complex song at full tilt with his greatest band at 100%
He looked great played great guitar rocked out and killed the show!

Plays chrous is one of his greatest ever!

People always talk about RRHOF and the recent SNL appearances as hallmarks of Prince's guitar performance.

I still say the PR-SOTT period featured his most dazzling guitar work. His tone was distinctive, pretty and warm.

I wish I knew how to replicate it.

But it was more than the tone. His scales were hitting. He obscured his blues runs a bit better, switched modes with far more fluidity and seemed to take more risks.

His playing, within the past decade or so -- though still very, very good -- has been more rote by comparison.

So, I'd agree that the JMI solo was symbolic of where he was at the time. His best? Eh.

I agree, but the reason I get so excited for these national TV shows is that everyone can see how great he is without having to dig into bootlegs like Small Club. I was in the record store the day after the R&R Hall of Fame show and I overheard two 50 yr old guys talking about the show, and the guy bought one prince record and one Beatles record. They were saying that they didn't realize Prince could play like that.

To your point- why do you think his guitar playing has changed?

Maybe you're talking about the opening song, SOTT, which was performed to a drum machine pattern??

Gosh, that's a good question. My suspicion has been that he began immersing himself in more blues-based influences and abandoning more abstract ones. I mean, there was a sizable shift in tone and phrasing between that former period and the past 10 or so years. It still obviously is Prince playing, but the difference is apparent. On the tone tip, I suspect he lost or broke a key piece in his rack system or pedal board. That tone hasn't been back for a while, and I miss it. Though some of that can be attributed to the guitars he's been favoring, as well.

From the same show, RAVE easily beats it. Great show all around, but there is nothing better than RAVE on that CD.

I don't have the book in front of me, but I can confirm to you that both SOTT and Play in the Sunshine were prerecorded and only Prince and his guitar were totally live. The drums were also louder in the program, but it was recorded so that the sound was perfect.

Well I think he has the same drive and desire and ability but the tone has changed and as u know every coupla years he changes his sound. Now Around the sott/lovesexy time I think he just had youth and a remarkable desire 2 show what he was made of as a pre-requisite, he played with fury and skill.

I like his sound with feedback and that airy ass flanger sound he used round the beginning and the end of the cross in the sott movie, Thats the sound I equate with sott/lovesexy, the purple rain sound is remarkable 2 it is different and very loud. Prince just needs 2 get louder ands a bit dirtier sound wise agin in my opinion but his mastery of the instrument has never changed.

Great point....thats the word abstract he would do really avant garde things on guitar now its a lil bit more bluesy based but every now and again he goes in2 that abstract bag like even the solo in the song 3121, thats what im talkin about but even that could have a lil more distortion on it, but as is is super HOT

I know someone mentioned earlier that it was similar to the SOTT movie, but it is NOT the same as the SOTT movie version. I can tell you, catagorically, that the basic tune WAS recorded in the studio for the MTV show. Prince's vocals and his guitar were added during the show. This information comes from people in the band and there is a version of these songs that exist on tape that confirms this. Unless you have more concrete evidence to support your side, I think this matter may be over.

Either way, it was a great show.

I think Maceo always makes him perform to his best. I watch that clip over and over and it never ceases to amaze me.

That was at one of the Celebrations at Paisley Park, in either 2000 or 2001 (the latter, I think). One of the best files the club made available, IMO.
