Um, Prince didn't actually give her the song I believe. And she was already building up her own following before that single. I knew of her from her first record certainly. Of course that song was a huge hit, but she was doing alright before that. And isn't the hostage tale from after the record was out? I don't think that Prince had any hand in it being recorded by Sinead and was probably quite surprised it was the hit it was. No Sonny T?

I once saw a live concert of Sinead's on television (which i guess was from the tour supporting I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got album) and her live version of NC2U was possibly the most intense, moving version of ANY song i have EVER heard, by anybody. It was simply mind blowing.
Say what you will about her, but i don't think anybody (including ALL protegés) have ever graced one of his songs with such passion . [Edited 4/12/06 23:10pm] [Edited 4/12/06 23:11pm]

It's such a great tune but I never liked it how
Prince produced it either with The Family & how he does it. It's too bombastic I think. /peace Manki

Sinead's is good because it's simple, low-key, and Prince's because it's the direct opposite. And right now I prefer the bombastic P-version. No, Nothing Compares 2 U! I'm sorry but I love THE FAMILY'S version. That will never change.

Shinehead's version makes me want to urinate on her head. St. Paul OWNS that song. He made it what it is - Soulful - and P and Rosie made it cute. I'll take St. Paul's version every time. Living to die and I'll die to live again - 360 degrees - comprehend

M - The orchestra and the sax alone make it far superior to baldy's version. Living to die and I'll die to live again - 360 degrees - comprehend

A solo version live of Prince on piano would be great, maybe a sax solo too. St Paul is so much trying to copy Prince, it sounds like a Prince cover band with a white singer.. Oh it is.. ______________________________________________

Prince and Rosie's is for people who prefer style and prettiness. I'm all into prettiness myself, but Sinead really brings it home. Especially that one live version. Devastating.

Personally I prefer Sinead's version. She makes the song sound real and heartfelt.
Prince and Rosie's version is way to 'vegas-y' for my taste, all surface and no substance. Both the delivery and the fact that it's been turned into a duet seems quite inappropriate to the lyrics and meaning of the song (which is also what Mariah did to The Beautiful Ones!) I do like The Family's version as well. In fact that was the first version I heard. But as good as it is, I still think Sinead nailed it.

Um... I heard Sinead's version of the song first, and I liked it. I just don't like Sinead. I heard Prince's version, and I didn't like it so much. Maybe if it happened the other way around, I would've like Prince's version better.

Have you not heard the ONA Live version? It's mostly Prince on piano with a sax solo... I just find the Family version a bit weedy. And I totally agree with Boris that the version with Rosie on The Hits completely misses the emotional point of the song, which is someone heartbroken and lamenting the break-up of a relationship - and thus needs to be a single voice singing, not a duet. Whatever you think of Sinead's version, at least she seemed to understand what the song was about - it's not pretty, it's emotional.

The cool thing about Sinead's version is that it is so un-Prince sounding, much like The Bangles' Manic Monday. "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

I was a huge Sinead fan before NC2U, she was getting very big on college/alternative radio. Brilliant first album. I share thebige's recollection of events too... Prince sent for Sinead to meet after her version of NC2U blew up, and she gave an alarming report of Prince verbally abusing her, chastising her for swearing, and refusing to let her leave. They weren't recording, or planning to. Now, I love Sinead, but she was always a little drama back then. And I think Prince chose the wrong woman to lecture. ...: s l o w l y c a n d l e b u r n s :...

I think he had Rosie because he was almost afraid to sing it solo or something. But its not like St Ppaul can do it better than Prince! ______________________________________________
