Black Sweat more JB than Get on the Boat? Everyone says "I'm sick of Prince doing James Brown, that's why I hate Get on the Boat."
I haven't heard the same comments about Black Sweat, but that song sounds more like JB to me, except for the instrumentation/production. Get on the Boat doesn't sound like James to me, except that it has horns, and those, along with the rest of the song, have more of a Spanish/Latin feel. Black Sweat is a cooler song, though. Maybe "doing James Brown" isn't such a bad thing when it's done right? [Edited 4/11/06 16:23pm] My Legacy

"Black Sweat" sounds more like "Prince" than anything.
The stripped-down bassless percussion sound of "Kiss" (1986) and "When Doves Cry" (1984) with a "Lady Cab Driver" (1982) kind of beat. It's ALL Prince! "Get on the Boat" is more like Staple Singers featuring James Brown. [Edited 4/11/06 16:19pm]

I think BS sounds like classic Prince, which of course is influenced by JB.
I do agree that Get on the Boat does not sound like JB. It seems that any funk song with a lead horn line must be a JB song to most people. Get on the Boat has more in common with Everlasting Now, and i agree it has a "latin" sound to it. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

Yeah, the instruments & falsetto sound like Prince. But what I'm saying is that people are missing that the song itself (not the sound of the instruments) is more like James Brown than get On the Boat, but since there's synths and Linn drums, they say it's Prince. I don`t think of james when I listen to BS. In fact I rarely listen to BS. The reason is that it is to similar to one of Prince most famous songs, Kiss. And as 319 the song is far away from beeing at that level. And the reason for why BS never became a hit is because it is to typical Prince. You know, drum machine and falsetto. I believe that sex is a beautiful thing between two people. Between five, it's fantastic.

can someone please go listen to SexMe?Sexmenot? and tell me what they think? Someone said it reminded them of BS (or vice versa should I say) and I think alot of 3121 sounds like that era, but I listened to it last night and to be honest it geuinely sounds like a prototype for BS. It amuses it comes from princes lowest ebb commercially and now he releases a song like it as a single, which admittedly is better but still - suddenly he's a critics darling again.

I guess the real point is that I can't imagine James singing Get on the Boat, but I can easily hear him singing Black Sweat, minus the falsetto. My Legacy

Black Sweat steals from alot of Prince stuff- the synth is a little "Gett Off", the production a little "kiss" and the keyboard sounds alot like George Michael "I Want Your Sex" to me. and the title is pretty close to "Cold Sweat" ______________________________________________

The sound to me is very Nasty Girl, but the only thing I think he actually kind of borrows from another person is the synth line, which reminds me or Dr. Dre. [Edited 4/13/06 11:52am] My Legacy
