amazing article about "Kiss" http://bg.mixonline.com/a...inces_kiss
I'm sure many of you have already seen this article, but I came upon it tonight for the first time, and found it amazingly interesting. "Kiss" sounds like a lucky accident.

Great article!
Many thanks. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

they forgot to mention how much it resembles Helene Smith's - 'You Got To Be A Man' and James Brown's 'Papa's Got A Brand New Bag'
and they said Maserati, it's Mazarati

It says David Z did the beat on Linn 9000...that was the 3rd Linn drum.
It hought Prince mainlyu used the Linn LM-1...which has that signature 1999/Purple Rain sound which Kiss also has.

and now im pissed... Yeah... calling Mark Brown a "session bassist" makes it sound like he was just hired help. Also, I think the song was recorded in 1985, NOT 1986... it was released in '86.

I've read this article before, it's kind of funny how David Z and Mazarati are struggling to construct a song around what Prince gave them, calling it only half an idea, surely ANY song is half an idea when it starts? What did they want, the whole song handed over on a fully-produced demo plate like Prince did with 100mph?!
Also, it says that Prince only supplied one verse and the chorus - but it never explains how the rest of the lyics came into being. I'm assuming Prince came up with those after he took the song back? In a way, I've always thought Prince's involvement in this track was UNDER-rated to those that know the inside story, though of course David Z's was as well to the general public.

QUOTE FROM ARTICLE: “I ran the hat through a delay unit, set about 150 milliseconds, printed that to tape and printed the original hat to another track and then alternated between ‘source’ and ‘blend’ on the delay unit, recording those passes. It created a pretty cool rhythm that was constantly changing in tone and complexity but was still steady"
..... The low end was filled up instead by using a classic Prince trick: running the kick drum through an AMS 16 reverb unit's reverse tube program. “It fills up the bottom so much you really don't miss the bass part, especially if you only use it on the first downbeat,” says Z. The hi-hat track was similarly dispatched, leaving only nine tracks of instruments and vocals on the record, which certainly made it easier to mix. Z recalls, only half jokingly, that the mix, which was done on an API console, took about five minutes. And there you have Black Sweat... An inferior song employing the same sort of technique...

Ooh, the cup is always half-empty for you, isn't it?! I could say it is great song employing an appropriate technique to create a contemporary track with a feel of classic Prince tracks of old.

Whats half empty about that? Just pointing out something that makes sense to me. Ive never read how Kiss was made before this. Now ive read it I can hear how he applied the same (ish) techniques to BS. Unfortunately, I dont think it quite worked as well as BS is definately the inferior of the two. And I quite like BS... so

Thanks for that interview. Great read. So David Z is the genius behind this tune, huh? Goes to show you that sometimes "less is more".

I like this article. Very interesting! Thanks.
I love this part: "He said to me, ‘This is too good for you guys. I'm taking it back.’” From that moment on, “Kiss” became a Prince record." I don't know why, that just sounds like he would of said that kind of sarcasticly. Everytime I comb my hair
