"Hot Stage Lights"/VAN HUNT.....Prince rip off?

For those who have the new album "On The Jungle Floor" by Van Hunt, what do you think of the song "Hot Stage Lights?"
That song is 200% Prince. biggrin Even the way he says "Its clear, I'm man of the year, but I wont go near..." that is PRINCE..lol

that rip off is so hilarious.
Now Im not saying anything negative about Van Hunt or his project because I prefer his new CD over "3121" anyday, all day. But does anyone notice the similiarities or is it just me?

ain't no rip-oof, man. maybe a small, tiny bit Prince-ish.

that song is hot like fiyah!
maybe there are some lyrical similarites. but they really just sound like things Prince might say rather than things he actually said.

my favorite line is:
Invited me over for tea, looking hot and murderous
from head to toe.
I took a seat right by the door with my hand on my gun,
determined to keep my clothes on.

gun. funny... like, "C'mon kiss the gun."

I disagree. And the fact that you call it a "rip-off" is in itself NEGATIVE.

This is not answering the question, but it is a HOT song, one of my favorites on the album. I'm glad that Van is back! And he admits that Prince has definitely influenced him, so wouldn't be a bad thing if it's a bit Princey.

still just prince-ish to me. name a prince song that it sounds like.

i think it's sounds too r&b to be labeled a prince rip-off
and the end sounds just as rick james-ish or funkadelic-ish as it does prince-ish.

Prince fans think everything is a ripoff of the man.
The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

"You still wanna take me to prison...just because I won't trade humanity for patriotism."

At this point in his career, we cant really say anything is a Prince "rip-off."Once you are a generation removed, its ok.

Just as we never said that Prince was a Sly Stone or JB "rip-off". We should just be happy his influence is still strong.

EmbattledWarri
or

"Rip off"

a rip off is presumably when you steal something from another artist.
Van Hunt, borrowed alot of prince's flavor, but so have alot of artist
Hunt never ripped anyone off, just borrowed from his influences
saying Van ripped Prince off
would be like saying how Prince ripped off Joni Mitchel, The Ohio Players, Sly and the family stone and Miles Davis...
I am a Rail Road, Track Abandoned
With the Sunset forgetting, i ever Happened
