Prince the Black Beck???Are you kiddding me? The following review is the official Amazon.com review of 3121.Although the reviewer is trying to compliment Prince and his latest work, I found myself hating the comparison to Beck.
First of all Prince is an influence on Beck. How can you compare an older influencial artist to a younger artist and act as if the young artist is the standard. Beck even said he grew up watching Prince videos. Secondly, why is it that so many white authors seem to think it is OK to always Quantify Black achievers by comparisons to whites? this linquistic formaula looks like this : He/she /it(Black Person or Institution) is the Black (Insert name of white person/institution) Can you imagine this author writing "Madonna is the white Beyonce?" Amazon.com Add 3121 to the mounting pile of evidence: Prince is the black Beck. He's a whole lot sexier, no doubt, but there's more to both musicians than image. All-out weirdness for one. Edginess for another. And a fine-tuned sense of how to combine the two to create some of the decade's most vital music for a third. Prince--looking ageless in videos for the first two singles, the controversy-courting "Black Sweat" and the sauna-steeped "Te Amo Corazon"--proves fearless as ever here, folding fat slabs of disco-funk into rock, heaping measured doses of hip-hop atop soul-tinted jazz supports, and slamming Latin rhythms against old-school R&B riffs. Nothing sounds as slinky-stylish-smart. And nobody delivers quite so deliciously, especially when what they're delivering is ultimately a madcap sonic mash. The usual hype surrounding a Prince release attended this one; over the long-term, expect a few standouts within a way worth-it set to emerge. They include the danceable "Love"; the gospel-lite falsetto feast "Satisfied"; and the summer-breezy "Beautiful, Loved & Blessed." --Tammy La Gorce To All the Haters on the Internet

Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

I think it's similar to a dangling participley thingy ma bob. They are just saying in their own way Beck sounds like prince but in turning around, they give it a modern spin for those that may not exactly know who Prince is (it's possible) or know his music that much. They could have said Beck is a whipte Prince, but they are reviewing Prince's album. Yes it could have been phrased a bit better (the beauty of online reviewers IMHO) but I get what the guy is sayin.
