Prince let's his ego get the best of him when it come to proteges. I think he realizes that many of these artist have minimal talent; but I think he believes, in his mind, that he truly can create something from nothing (i.e.. Carmen Electra).

But there is a big difference between the poreges of yesteryear and now.And that difference lies in the reason. Before he had so much material he needed another creative outlet to put music out from. ANd that led to the idea of seperate bands to put forth this music. The Time and V6 were born. Not sure when the term protege came about as there weren't exactly proteges. But the music was on the scene and was getting noticed. He tried sort of to cover up that HE was behind the music.

I think perhaps it was with SHelia E that he felt he was helping tap into the potential of another artist. I am sure there was some aspect they were good at on thier own, so maybe he figured he could discover them.

Thing is most of this talent was really in singing...if that and not much else.
