i think american idol discourages young people from pursuing the songwriter or instrumentalist part of being a "pop idol". now, if you're somewhat pretty and have enough lungs to shout all your vocals (volume as opposed to range), that's all it takes. even madonna had more going on when she was starting out - she knew how to create spectacle and she understood the importance of having a persona. that kind of appeal is all but extinct these days. | |

American Idol is so campy. Even though I watch it, Prince doing AI would seem 2 faced. Doesnt he scoff at shows like that? Does he really care about an album charter or does Universal? & | |

You have a point, but at least most of the standard pop market got there on their own. Don't believe me? Pick any pop act of the last 20 years or so and look into the history of how they got into the business. Fewer than people apparently believe had any help from an audition process.
