I paid $200 for the 16 track version of Goldnigga and $300 for Volumes I-V of the Work. I know I could find fileshares of everything, but I must have liner notes, etc. It's just how I am... shrug

uhh..even when they are totally made up by bootleggers?

hmm

Yes. Compare it to paintings: would you rather have a nicely printed, 'official' poster of The Starry Night or a color copy you printed out from an image you found online? Even though the poster is not the original painting, the poster's quality is better than if you were to print one yourself. That's how I see it. All my bootlegs except maybe 2-3 are original pressed, ex or sb, etc. I'm not interested in the crappy ones. The db is my bible. biggrin

And my Goldnigga is the real deal. I checked the numbers on the inner disc, etc...

To each his/her own I suppose. shrug
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

wait a minute..i must come back to this because well, the analogy doesnt really hold up...when your dealing with painting replicates its been created by the artist...

linnear notes from a bootlegger have been created by the bootlegger..the only thing to come from the artist is the music, which can be downloaded (for free) without the non-artist contributed stuff.....

ya know what i mean?

(ps..your free to keep spending oodles and oodles of ooos..im just trying to better understand your reasonings..)

Not really--painters don't replicate posters of their works (except maybe Warhol, but that's a WHOLE different topic); the museums who own the works own the rights/reproductions of those works. van Gogh died before MoMA owned The Starry Night, but you can probably buy a poster of The Starry Night at MoMA (I don't own a poster of it, so I'm presuming here) I doubt van Gogh & his estate are getting any money from the sale of the poster. But the poster is nice, big and colorful and definitly better quality than if I tried to make my own poster from an image I found on the internet. The poster is not quite as cool as owning the original, but its more practical for people who like van Gogh and won't be able to own the real painting.
Bootlegs are 'replicas' of Prince's songs. People who 'own' (have access to) the unreleased versions reproduce them and sell them to people who like the artist but don't have access/can't afford the original master tapes.
Like van Gogh, Prince doesn't get any money from the sale of bootlegs. Like the person who buys the poster, if I buy a bootleg, I get something that I normally couldn't afford or have access to, and it sounds better than if I tried to do it myself.

linnear notes from a bootlegger have been created by the bootlegger..the only thing to come from the artist is the music, which can be downloaded (for free) without the non-artist contributed stuff.....

I understand your point. Maybe I should have compared that part to an artist monograph instead of a poster. To use Van Gogh again, I can buy a book on van Gogh, full of beautiful, color reproductions of his paintings, and essays written about said paintings. Did van Gogh write the essays? No. Did van Gogh create the book? No. I know that people who write essays for monographs would hopefully be scholars and I am aware that bootleg liner notes are FAR from scholarly essays, but they provide the same service--they give information/images that I would not otherwise have access to.

(ps..your free to keep spending oodles and oodles of ooos..im just trying to better understand your reasonings..)

Those are my reasonings...I'm fully aware that most people will think I'm wacky but I'm used to that so again, shrug.

(Ironically, I don't buy posters of art, I only buy the real deal. Nothing too expensive or famous--yet. wink )

Wow..this is a good one.

the most I ever paid at one time was $400.00 for "The Work" all 5 volumes
and it was worth every penny, each volume has 4 CD's and are all the classics and then some. There are songs on these CD's I've never heard him sing before and there are many different versions of ones he has released and several songs he's never released. Greatest purchase I ever made! eyepop

Same here. Picked The Work up for £220 around the time it first came out. No regrets here either! Apart from that I paid £150 for an original Gotta Stop 12". I've had some bargains over the years as well but that's a whole other thread I guess! smile

I once paid $80 (aussie dollars) for the Lovesexy Live 1+2 VHS tapes. I thought they were rarer that they actually turned out to be mad When I was in London a few months later I found them for like 5 quid each!

you got the right attitude, those bootlegs are true cultural art, I wish I had originals of everything! Even the crappy ones, which sometimes have the most flavor! I wish artwork was still vinyl size.

i think i paid $170 for 3cd set deposition,
and when in europe i saw the black album on vinyl, got excited and paid about 40 euros for it.

on the other hand i picked up a madhouse cd for about 12 dollars
a (i would think rare) picture interview disc for 7 euro
and sexy mf+strolling on vynyl that is actually cut in the shape of his symbol for about $15

most things are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them
