...I think a little criticism is always healthy in ANY type of discussion. Just because you may believe in one way of thinking, it doesn't mean others will. I think people tend to forget that when they voice their opinions. Like they say, without the "ying", you can't have a "yang"...

I just don't understand, i ama fam, and I thought that this place of all would be aplace where I would be welcome, you know it seems like a Prince page should be most enjoyed by his really hardcore fans, not people he seem to hate him. If you don't like Prince, or haven't liked him for years, then here is the question I ask you: why are you here? I am not saying that 'you shoudl leave' and 'you are bad', I just want to know why you enjoy this site. Is it to talk to other people who don't like him? maybe you guys would have a better time at an anti-prince page. go ahead, get all pissed off at me about this. sad

There are too many critics on this webpage, as if PRince hired them himself, that's why it doesn't pay to say anything anymore, it wasn't always like this though, it you used to be fun.

What's wrong with being obsessed with Prince. If he brings people joy and happiness with his art, so be it. If that person wants to immerse themselves in Prince as much as they can, why shouldn't they be allowed to without being called names?

Some people are fams for sport teams, actors, other singers, writers, etc.

If someone has a room full of LA Laker memorabilia and goes to every Laker game, and thinks Shaq is the best center of all time and Kobe is better than MJ, is he a blind freak? I don't think so.

If someone thinks Stephen King is the greatest writer of all time and buys all of his books and thinks they're all great is he a freak?

I think some people need to lay off and stop trying to come of as so much better than everyone else.

No, no, no, no, no... there are no "fams" of anyone or anything other than Prince. Prince made the word up to describe his fans and I would expect that nobody in the world (outside of the Prince community) would even comprehed what you meant if you called yourself a "fam."

But you shouldn't be laughed at for being a Hard-Core Prince fan or Dressing like him, or wearing his Symbols,or clothing. People Suck sometimes!

See, that's where you derail. You had me with the hardcore fan bit, but then you lost me.

I don't have anything against being hardcore into the music, or even some of the background and surrounding material, because that relates to experiencing and understanding the music. I get that. I'm a part of it to whatever extent. There's nothing wrong with immersing yourself in the music. That's just living life, appreciating the art.

But, yes, you should be laughed at for trying to dress like him, or routinely wearing his symbol. Because, that's where you get into the idolatry and the worship and the immitation, and you stop being you.

That's him. He does what he does. You're you, and what he does doesn't work for you. And I've witnessed A LOT of people that have taken it to a spectacularly unhealthy and pathetic degree. Those people are invariably self-proclaimed "fams". When you call yourself a "fam", you associate yourself with that lot.

The absurdity and inappropriateness is just plain funny, not to mention aggravating, to witness in person.

I don't understand why he has such an issue with the so called Fanatics? The ones that Actually Do GIVE a Shit about HiM? I would rather have a bunch of Fams or Fanatics that TRULY LOve and Adore me and my WORK then some Lame-os that couldn't give a Rat"s Ass if I lived or died and Know Virtually Nothing about myself or my CRAFT! I can understand not cracking up and causing SCENES. I can Certainly Understand that. But to Dis his biggest Fans is just plain Wrong! These Lame-O's sometimes Actually turn out to be the Ones you Gotta watch out for. Why? Well is a nut gonna act Nutty if he is going to harm you? No of course NOT! He's gonna be nice and Calm . So any Fam or Fanatic would be o.k. in my book and I'd actually welcome or humor this to a degree. Like they always say . It's the Quite One's that you Gotta watch out For ;cause you Don't know what they are hiding!

Do you always randomly capitalize words? Is it just a random reach for the shift key, or are you trying to speak in labels and titles?

People are saying what fam means to them. You cannot invalidate that. Fam is whatever it means to the individual who chooses to acknowledge it as such.

So if the haters want to lump all fams in one big ugly and uniform standard...go ahead...some of us know differently wink

At least he has the excuse of being 15 years old... what's your excuse you stretched-out biddy? Ha!

I think you're jealous a 15 year old can complete sentences and form opinionated thoughts huh?

As for as FAMS are concerned, Prince gave his "followers" that moniker because he's a freakish sort of fellow. If you give in to his whims by calling yourself something a bit ridiculous, then, in MY opinion, you're just as GOOFY! Maybe not ALWAYS fanatical, crazy, obsessive... but definitely goofy.

He's just trying to find away to keep people from ogling him while he's eating, or taking pictures of him while he's farting, etc...

My feeling is, he's trying to be INCLUSIVE so that maybe his fans can be PROTECTIVE of his privacy (i.e. those two dumb sisters who blabbed his story about his kid to the tabloids)... Yet, from reports, there are still people bum rushing him, trying to steal food out of his kitchen (lol) and generally being the crazy fanatics he hoped he wouldnt have.

Good Luck, son, it aint working. You're gonna have to do more than calling your fans "fam"ily. Cuz even some family members you gotta cut off at the knees (as if you didn't know).

Bottom line is that Prince has his fams, but these are not the people that he respects or wants around him. Somebody pointed out that when it comes time to pick and chose whos's going to get into the parties and who's not, it's the fams in their costumes and Purple Rain lace who are left outside waiting and crying with despair while the "cool people" are chosen to go inside and party with Prince.

A 5'0", 85lb. brunette woman with major attitude that says "I don't really like Prince, I'm just here to have a good time" is going to have a better chance to speak with Prince, dance with Prince, or even sing with Prince than some fam who adores him and shows it by wearing a prince t-shirt and a hat covered in Prince pins/buttons.

This topic is like beating a dead horse.
If people have an idea in their head about what FAMs are and it is a negative idea, then that's why they hate fams. It's very simple really.
Asking the question over and over is not going to make anyone like them more.

You are so very, very right!

As I have said before... "Reality" is the only word in the English language that should always be used in quotes. Everything is perception and opinion, both of which are subjective and therefore not universal.

...and, not only will it not make people like "fams" more, it might actually make them like "fams" even less!

Does anyone remember when Prince referred to all of us as 'friends' because he didn't "like" the word 'fan' (short for 'fanatic', and maybe in his mind 'lunatic'). Well, I don't consider myself his friend, because I can't be friends with someone I never met personally, and I don't consider myself a 'fam' either. He's not a member of my family, nor am I a member of his. I am a 'fan'. You have baseball fans, football fans, soccer fans, Yankees fans etc. I am a Prince fan. I'm not going to change how I refer to myself because Prince doesn't like the word. That would be fanatical behavior!

What annoys me is that people aren't even reading each other's posts in this thread. They're just going on and on with arguments over semantics. It goes far beyond a debate over use of the fan or fam.

It's about attitudes and behaviors, not words.

BRAVO! To re-iterate what I said earlier, he doesn't respect these "fams", but he sure the hell does NEED them. He doesnt have that broad fanbase anymore, while he doesn't .. he needs those of us that need musical fixes (unfortunately that includes those who just need Prince in an unhealthy weird way).

PS. My girlfriend (before she was my GF) used to hang out with Prince all the time... why? She simply just didn't care. She didn't stare at him, she wasn't scared to talk to him if she felt like it, but she also thought she was just as cool as he was... her attitude got her far, cuz she is 5'9 and fine, but much too tall for Prince! biggrin

Yes, you are so right. He does NEED the fams to buy his posters, pictures, and other merchandise, but I don't think he likes or respects them.

The people dressed in costumes who stare at him, crowd him, cry and beg to meet him are never going to meet him. The bodyguards make sure that the fams stay out of Prince's space.

The security guards know what Prince's taste and preferences are. If they see a certain type of woman, they will let her into the VIP area or into the closed parties. The women allowed into Prince's world are for the most part young, brunette, thin, white or Hispanic. The women allowed into Prince's world are not the ones who show up at afterparties carrying a 1999 LP and wearing a Prince T-shirt.

I hear ya on that. I think its a shame that the fun is being taken out of being a Prince fan. Why is it such a no no no no no! to be a fam? Sports fans can have whole rooms in their house dedicated to their team or favorite athlete. Beatles fans can have their whole house decked out with Fab Four memoriabilia.

What would Prince shows and the celebration be like if everybody is going to stand in the back posing as a cool ass naysayer who treats Prince with nonchalance, like he's nothing special question

As much as you and I do not agree...I agree with you on this one. OF course we know me as the sanddollor lady...At the concert, soundcheck..I was first row corner seat..prince was walking down back towards the stage to get ready for the concert. I was all alone as he got closer to me 3 body guards behind him I just stood up in front of him and told him I wanted him to have something. He stopped looked at me let me say whatever I had to say and his body guards DID NOT EVEN but into the conversation or tell me to move. I am hispanic/latin, 5'2" 125 pounds...I look very young...I was wearing jeans combat boots (kinda like hiking boots) and a plain simple blouse.. He gave me all the attention I wanted and after the simple accident he wanted me to go talk with him...I said no.. Only because it was a concert and it was not the right time. I did not even go to the afterparty I went straight to my hotel room...Yes he does have his preference in woman...And yes his bodyguards know who they are.
