I'm so sick of this

Is anyone else just fucking SICK AND TIRED of being hassled for liking Prince's music? Anytime I mention anything Prince related, I usually get a sarcastic response from people. The latest was "Oh, your opinion doesn't matter because you like Prince".

disbelief I think it's probably my age, but does this happen to anyone else too? How on earth do you get past people saying crap like "Prince is gay/he's not a real musician/etc" and prove them wrong?

It used to bother me a lot more when I was younger. I'd get all hot and bothered when people would say Prince was a fag, or he was just an MJ clone.

Now I'm older and relatively chilled. When people say stupid shit I just throw stupid shit right back in their face.

Stupid person: "Prince is so gay."

Me: "You saying Prince is so gay is so gay. And your mom is gay too."

Which sounds immature, but it gets the point across.

Guess you gotta live with it. Or become a closet Prince fan. Hey it helps that he's in the Hall of Fame now. You can use the ol' "Well Prince is in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, but don't worry, if they ever make a Loser Hall of Fame, you're in like Flinn" line.

i find it funny when people attempt 2 pay him out, whether it be from his crazy 80s clothing, i mean that one is pretty easy 2 defend i mean it was the 80s and could get away with it as it was the fashion, or if they say his gay or sumthin how does it explain his several marriges? or copoius songs about rooting chicks or wateva.
But hey if people wanna b sooo ignorant and pay out an awesome musician who they think doesnt do much, etc let them be ignorant EMO cry babies who dont know good music even when its been around for soo long and still goin!

Who the heck are these dismissive people who are talking to you like you're stupid? Your "friends"? Find new friends. Quick.

Life is too short to waste it with people who don't value you or what you think simply because you don't share a the same taste for one single musician.

I'd bet the people heckling you are probably all OVER Creed and Blink 182

I simply tell them that their opinion doesn't matter because they obviously haven't listened to much of his music. I've been telling people this for a looooong time too!

When I was much youngerI used to try to defend my position, now I just laugh because I know I'm right.

Maybe since most of my friends are my age and all grew up in the 80s, Prince may not be the favorite, but they all acknowledge his talent.

But pretty much all of us think hes a bit odd, though we all follow thru by reminding ourselves that most genius are.

I never got that. Maybe it's a NY thing. Maybe it's because if he comes up I'm usually talking to a musician. I don't know a musician that doesn't respect his talent.

the only people who pay out Prince are usually people younger than me (I'm 19). Most people my age or older know the score with P, but a lot of my friends, friends dont know much about P other than his abstract 80s get up and thats about it.....and they mostly listen 2 Punk music so again theres your answer hahaha!

As I get older I'm getting less tolerant of the anti-Prince reactions I encounter. I no longer have any time for people who think that because their perception of Prince is of a talentless weird gay midget that it follows that his music isn't worth listening to, and that anyone who does so is sub-normal. These days I generally just tell them to fuck off.

You know, of all the people I've met who claim not to like his music, none of them actually have an extensive Prince collection, which is the only requirement in forming an intelligent opinion about his music.

As I said I'm getting less tolerant, and I now feel that if sombebody pours scorn on me for my taste in music, then they're a moron and not somebody I want to know. So I find 'fuck off' to be the best response as it usually precludes further conversation, which suits me fine.

So my fascination with Prince's music has probably saved me from hundreds of boring conversations.

I don’t hold back. They give me shit, I go into one about their tastes in music, their ineptitude at understanding real talent blah blah blah…

Ive learned over the past 20 odd years of being a fan that you either get bullied or do the bullying… And at the end of the day, we know something they don’t. We hear something they don’t and we get pleasure from something they don’t. Come the day when Prince becomes globally recognised as one of the greatest musical genius of modern times they will all be forced to wallow in their blind arrogance and poor poor taste. Unfortunately for us it will be a long wait… Probably have to wait until the man is six feet under until he gets the true recognition he deserves. But until then, just keep bullying back and rub THEIR noses in it for a change…

I may be able to shed some light on this phenomenon (as a fellow gayer). I get hot and bothered when people say 'OMG Prince is TEH GHEY' to me, not so much because it isn't true - but because if he IS gay, then a lot of his music is just predicated on a lie. One of the central themes with P's music is his relationship(s) with women... if I thought that was all just a deception it would make me lose a lot of faith in P's truthfulness as an artist, ya dig?

With someone like George Michael, he's always kept his lyrics very open to interpretation so he's played it safe (although I was surprised when he was revealed to be a bummer, I didn't see that one coming - lol I know - HOW?) - but if it was ever revealed that Prince was gay, it would really upset me, simply because in my eyes, it makes him a liar - worse, a musical liar.

Although I did always think that the 'If we can't make babies' line in Erotic City may have referred to a homosexual experience... let's face it, P's freaky enough to have tried everything once. Still wanna get on the boat? lol

In response to the original question, if someone is (shock, horror) slating P's musical talent (they're more than welcome to criticise him for the way he acts, dresses or talks but if they touch the music I'm comin' for em), just bet them either a ridiculously large amount of money or indeed your life that there will DEFINITELY be at least ONE song in Prince's entire back catalogue (including bootlegs, remixes, b-sides etc) that the detractor will love. And then if they challenge you to prove it? Then sit down, start with For You, all the way through to 3121 and the entire Testament bootleg. They'll either capitulate or join the NPGMC the next day.

With Prince haters, it's always about finding that one song they can't deny rocks their socks off. For moshers/System of a Down fans 'What's My Name' is always a good one. They always get disappointed when there isn't a whole album recorded in that vein. What a tune.

Spunky

Of-course Prince’s music is crap - man - for someone like me who likes to binge drink, throws-up, doesn’t wash- smells like a rotting dead fish his music really does stink. Man with all my hormones I could not possibly cope with this getting in touch with your feminine side crap. The man even dresses in bright colours – what is that about and he sings in a high voice and wears high heals. Really real men just don’t do that- sing or scream like that.

Seduction - what is that? You just give it her - you know they always gaging for it etc etc

Yes I do get the same thing about Prince being a fairy – I think is says more about the people who say it – the cavemen and women who think aggression = masculinity.

Don't get me wrong I think there is a lot of things prince has done outside his music that have given people ammunition to attack him with. I personal do not claim to understand the person - he creates some great music that all that matters to me.

As for the gay comments, I ask them why they are giving Prince a complement if they don't like him.

As for the "Prince ain't shit musically" comments, I never hear them from people my own age (38). A lot of these people used to like Prince's music in the early 1980s but haven't liked it since then. They may say they haven't liked his music in years but they have never said he wasn't talented. They just simply didn't like the direction he went after "Purple Rain" and dropped him.

I have heard people in their 20s say that Prince ain't shit or say that he can't compete with whatever particular artist they are into at the time. They never compare him to an older artist, they compare him to a current artist (usually hip hop). I don't waste my time arguing with them because they don't know what the hell they are talking about because they were brought up in a bullshit music scene and don't know any better.

It doesn't bug me that they say he's gay or bi (Prince can do whatever the hell he wants 2 behind his closed doors), but when those people use the reason that he's (possibly) gay as a excuse not 2 like his music, that's when I start 2 get pissed off 2 all extremes!!

I get you. I just learned this lesson too. You aren't alone...there are plenty of us that are "old school" (with prince) and like his work and understand where he is in life in respect to his music...and are just fine with it. I don't really understand all the bashing, but no matter. I just enjoy the music.
