The Oprah interview Why does Oprah never mention her '96 interview with Prince? Was it that bad or uninteresting or what? I have unfortunately never seen the interview and I'd really like to, so is there some site where I can watch it? Hq doesn't seem to have it.
And: I think it would be very interesting if she'd interview Mayte, Apollonia or Mani. None of them are women you see so very much of in the media and I'd love to here them talk about their life. Which of the 3 would you guys like to see on Oprah?

i think the oprah interview was really awkward. i think it was intended to show off prince's newfound prosperity as a husband and father, and it was also supposed to promote his first album as a "free" artist, "emancipation", a/k/a "the album he was born to make".
by the time of the actual interview, all of that appeared to have blown up in his face, and it appears they were left with the task of quickly putting together some damage control for the sake of salvaging some publicity for the album. in my opinion, that episode is very sad, and more than a little awkward in places. i think it's a very insightful interview, perhaps not in ways prince or oprah might have intended. it shows a really sad, introspective side of prince.

Not only that Venus... there was the whole incredibly sad situation with the birth of his son Gregory at that time as well... Keeping that PRIVATE was one thing... keeping his emotions in check had to be the most difficult at that time...
I think I have that O interview on tale... now you make me want to look for it... ugh.. Why don I label the $hit I record?????

I think it had just happened, and that's why I always give Mayte more credit that other people want to give her. Say what you want about that woman, but she was strong as hell to go on a press junket and act like nothing was wrong, when a child she had carried for nine months had just died. They did an interview with Gumbel where she almost broke face, but she kept it together.

Best interview ever.....
Oprah: "So does it bother you that people think you're weird or that you're gay?" Prince: "Hey.... .....whatever floats the boat." It takes a strong confident individual to absolutely not give a damn about what people think, especially in the thug infested 1990s. Andy is a four letter word.

If more people had this attitude the world would be better off. Exactly. That's probably the number one reason I've continued sticking with him all these years even when he makes particular albums I don't like. He's always meant more to me than just his music. i think the best interview with anyone ever is carrie fisher's interview with madonna in rolling stone, YEARS ago...i think around '88 or '89? it was a two-parter. one of the funniest pieces of writing i've ever read.

It must be so incredibly hard to lose your child, a little new born baby. And then be on Oprah and try to keep it all together... Nobody can go through something like that without getting scarred for life. I hope he doesn't have to go through the same thing again. I hope that if or when Mani gets pregnant it'll be a cute, healthy little baby girl or boy!
I'm still asking: is there somewhere where you can watch the interview, not only read it? [Edited 4/6/06 7:33am]

I just can't understand why Prince didn't cancel the interview after the death of his son. I mean, he's cancelled appearances before at the last minute, even whole albums! Why go on and pretend things were fine when he could have avoided the whole thing completely.

Because everyone has their own way with dealing with grief.

just my own personal speculation, but at the time, i think prince felt there were huge stakes at hand with regards to the promotion of 'emancipation'. this was his first project really, truly on his own, without the safety net of WB. i think he felt he had a lot to prove, and that with all the obstacles that popped up, that the show had to go on. i think this was one time, though, when the show really needed to be shut down for a few...unless maybe it was all that was keeping him going.

Because he wanted to be on the Oprah show! Maybe Mayte told him to not cancel it.

Because he wanted to be on the Oprah show! Maybe Mayte told him to not cancel it. Maybe he wanted to maintain a sense of normalcy. If he cancelled it there may have been more questions and scrutinty into the death of his child. The media would probably have had a field day with that - they're heartless vultures. and besides, it's no one's business.
