The story behind 3121 charting so low on the uk charts only #9

Despite charting lower than many of its predecessors, 3121 was the most eagerly received new album by Prince in more than a decade, selling 37,130 copies last week to debut at number nine. Prince's last album of new material, 2004's Musicology, debuted at number three on sales of 32,945, while his 2001 Very Best Of set went one better, debuting at number two with 28,942 sales. Even his last number one album, Come, had lower first week sales than 3121, opening with 33,375 sales in 1994. 3121 is Prince's first Universal album, and means he has now released albums for all four current majors.

In Denmark the charts of last week hasn´t been published yet - but one of the biggest musicstores has him as #2 on their selling-chart! I´ll post when I know more!

These are the only charts where I could find 3121 to date (although I have to say I obviously did not look at all countries, just those that were more interesting to me).

I will be updating the original thread at hq as soon as new entries in other countries appear:

Soundscan numbers just came out for CANADA:
3121 debuted at #9 on the Top 100 Album chart.

The rest of the chart numbers (like R&B chart) are not yet available...

As I've said on another Thread - releasing in Mothers Day week when XFactor rejects and Opera-lite sell in spades was bound to make it a challenging chart. But given the whoe date thing, I dont supposed Universal UK had a chance of releasing in a different week

Greece

Israel
Japan
New Zealand
Slovakia
Please feel free to add info on any other country not listed here.

As a final note, I must confess I am delighted to see (after so many years...) Prince charting at pretty much every country, and with very good positions at many of them.

But I am not happy because of Prince is charting again: the good point, IMHO, is that the newer generations of people are being exposed to one of the best musicians ever in modern music. And I must confess also that I more or less considered Prince was mostly lost for younger people, which was a great loss IMHO. But thanks to the success of 3121, this seems not the case anymore. Furthermore, I bet the upcoming tour will put him forward again as what he has always been: the absolute maximum performer around ever, regarding modern music.

Aloisio

Italy 2nd week (the one and only official chart provided by Fimi-AcNielsen, as Billboard-Soundscan in the Usa), 3121 climbs up from #15 to #10.
In God we trust.
