I just came across a girls profile online and she had
3121 plastered all over her photos. Quite suprised i messaged her and ask her if she was a fan. She replied telling me "YES, a huge fan blah blah".
I thought hmmmm hmmm and asked her how many albums she owns?
her answer : "2"

My guess musicology and 3121.

How do you feel about people claiming to be MASSIVE prince fans
when they know nothing about him or his music?

Does it bother you at all?

I dont know, i think its good if new people come along for the ride
but why do people need to pretend?
i just tend to think 'oh god' rolleyes

Perhaps then you should introduce her to more Prince stuff, rather than imagining you are on a pedestal because you know more about Prince than her?

I have been a fan since 1984 and yet find myself dumbstruck by the knowledge of people here on the org half my age !!! I am a massive fan.....and I ain't talkin' about my waist line wink

lol

We all start out somewhere. I first became a fan after seeing Prince on his Musicology tour and immediate tried to listen to the rest of his catalogue within the next couple of months.

When I first arrived here, I felt as if I were on the outside looking in - even after having listened to the "essentials." All the talk of "The Sex of It," "Cross the Line," "Lisa," "Rebirth of the Flesh" and "The Scandalous Sex Suite" had me feeling like I still had a way to go. Thankfully, I talked to some members that didn't care for how long you were a fan and hipped me to alot of secrets.

When I see a new fan around here or meeting a new fan, I don't look at them with any bias. I was in their shoes at one point or another, as well. So, I can't hate.
Ooh, little darlin' if you're

As long as I don't have to stand out in the cold for hours on end, anymore. Only to end up 30 rows behind a bunch of 'em at a show. They're alright with me. cool

Man these people who want to be part of an "exclusive club" are just stupid. I'm sorry but how can it possibly be bad having Prince's fanbase increasing and a new generation of people getting into him?

Since 3121 came out I know two people who have bought the CD but have never bought a Prince CD before! They did so on my recommendation and that made me feel proud!

I think we should all do our bit to encourage newbies (especially to introduce these young whipper snappers to real music)
'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

I think its great. And if its a novelty it'll wear off, this happens every album more or less, so its no biggie.

I think its because if it touches you it gets you all messed up inside like when you are going out with someone you're crazy about, or love a chocolate bar so much you can't stop eating it, or,indeed can't listen to enough.

I read a post on another thread that was from someone who was born when lovesexy was released, initially i thought, crikey, but then i thought how great for that person to discover all the music bit by bit.

I've been a fan since I was 15, and was full of a sense of having missed out and desperate to listen to as much as I could. But I calmed down, and found out what i liked , started listening to the people listed as influences,James Brown Sly Stone,Curtis mayfield,Joni Mitchell e.t.c heard the protogees, saw him live,I think if you dedicated yourself all your life to hearing as much material as you can you could still never get close to what he's put out there

My Dad is a Jazz musician, and sometimes I feel left out That i don't know the huge repertoire of beautiful hoagy carmichael, fats waller, ella fitzgerald e.t.c songs he does.

Its just a great thing theres so much great stuff to hear.

Everybody has to start somewhere as a fan. How many CDs one owns isn't always an accurate way to measure another person's interest or appreciation of an artist (especially so if the fan is a young one, either chronologically and/or in terms of how new they are to having discovered a particular artist and so either just haven't amassed the entire back catalog, or don't have the $$ to do so immediately)

This whole pissing contest mentality of "I own more CDs and paraphenalia of XXX than do you, therefore I am a REAL FAN and you are not" is stupid.

A fan is a fan is a fan is a fan. What difference does it make to you and your enjoyment of the music if someone else is a short-term fan or a long-term one? Maybe this girl whose profile you read is new to Prince now, but in a year or so she'll be the next Zelaira or Krystal biggrin and will remain a Prince fan for life.

I completely agree with you, why is there so much snobbery with Prince fans. I got into Prince after getting the Batman album and at that point I felt like a fan because I loved the album so so much, after getting this album i just wanted to own everything prince has done.

Why cant we embrace all new fans because if they love the current music so much, they have some great discoveries ahead of them.

I'm always happy to see any new fans, old or young. The more the merrier!
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I think some people are in the "Prince Closet" too. I had worked with 2 people for some time and one day I was playing a Prince CD and they where like "WOW I didn't know you liked Prince, I like him too"

I couldn't agree with you more! If your budget allows for you to attend ONE Prince show when he's doing four or five in your town, that doesn't make you less of a fan than someone who goes to all of them. There's no logic to it...that's about disposable income, not who's a bigger fan.

And I'd rather say to this person, "glad you finally came around to Prince! He's been awesome since the late 70s!" instead of saying "you have no business calling yourself a fan because I've been into Prince since Dirty Mind."

Part of my response has to do with me being honest. I just recently jumped on the Ryan Adams bandwagon. Perhaps nobody else recording is as prolific as Prince besides Adams (though in a much shorter career thus far), and after too many people told me he was good I finally bought a cd and soon thereafter bought every other one of his albums. And now I'm obsessed with Ryan Adams second only to Prince. And I've never seen him live and I hope that longstanding Adams fans won't hate me for not realizing how awesome he is sooner.

WELCOME...ALL YOU NEW PRINCE FANS!!! GET ON THE BUS!

It's a good thing. Who do you think is gonna spread the word of the Prince legacy after all those 80's kids are gone?

Today's youth, that's who.

The more people under the age of 30 who are into Prince, the better.

Thas good!! I was at work and I was playing Black Sweat and my co-workers lil
14 year old daughter knew the song word for word!! I was so surprised!!!
